Suddenly, Josh’s voice cut through the tension. “Isn’t this the birthday party?”

Josh and Brady walked in together, heading straight for Madeline with easy smiles. Josh grinned. “Happy birthday, Madeline.”

Brady handed her a neatly wrapped gift. “Sorry we’re late. This is for you. Hope you like it.”
