Madeline was about to pick up her phone when another hard jolt threw her forward. The phone slipped from her hand and went flying. She didn’t have a chance to grab it before gunshots cracked through the air.
Julian’s face was tight with rage. He reached over and pushed her head down. “Get down. Don’t move.”
Broken glass scattered everywhere as the car windows shattered. The cold wind rushed in, sharp and biting.
Madeline tried to reach for her phone again, but the car rocked so hard she had to steady herself first. The cars chasing them just kept coming, more joining in every second. Whoever was after her was clearly not planning to let her get away tonight.
She didn’t have to guess who was behind it. Only Helene would go this far.
At that moment, word of the attack reached Christian at the Grayson estate. The second he heard Julian was with Madeline, he jumped to his feet. “What did you say? Is he hurt?”
“Not yet, sir.” The Grayson men would never touch Julian, and everyone else knew better than to risk it. But with bullets flying and cars crashing, anything could happen. It was just too dangerous.
Christian’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t even hesitate. “Pull everyone back.”
“Yes, sir.”
Helene heard and immediately panicked. “Christian, we can’t back off now. Madeline is the target, not Julian. No one will hurt him.”
Christian shot her a cold look, voice low and sharp. “What if someone messes up and Julian gets hurt? Are you going to answer for that?”
There was no way Christian would ever let his grandson get caught in the crossfire. Even if it meant letting Madeline go, he wasn’t about to risk Julian’s life.
“Tell them all to leave. Now.” There was finality in his voice.
Helene’s hands clenched so tight her knuckles went white. After coming this far, she wasn’t about to give up. The Grayson men might pull back, but the Fortner side definitely wouldn’t. She had made up her mind. Madeline was not getting out alive tonight.
