Claire couldn’t stop crying, her whole body shaking. Maxwell rubbed his brow, clearly worn down. After what happened tonight, they really needed to rethink whether sending her away from the Ballard family had been the right call.
He stood there quietly for a moment, thinking things through. His voice was calm but distant as he said, “Get some rest. I’ve already got people stationed outside your room. I won’t let anything happen to you again.”
Without waiting for a reply, Maxwell headed for the door. He didn’t linger.
Claire knew he was still upset about what went down that morning, but she couldn’t let this chance slip by. She kept her tears coming, voice trembling as she pleaded, “That imposter and the Grayson family are out of control. I’m terrified the same thing will happen again, just like last night. Please, can’t I just go back to the Ballard family estate? I’d be safe there, right?”
Maxwell paused, Julian’s words echoing in his mind. After thinking it over for a few seconds, he turned back to her. “Is there something going on between you and Julian? Like some kind of personal issue?”
Claire’s eyes flickered, but she quickly covered it up. She figured Julian had said something, but she wasn’t about to admit a thing.
“No, of course not. What could there be between us? Everything he’s done, it’s just to help that imposter replace me. Please don’t believe anything he says.”
A headache started pounding behind Maxwell’s eyes. He felt completely worn out.
Everyone around him seemed to have their own agenda. He couldn’t tell if Claire was lying, or if Julian was. Then there was the other Madeline, tangled up in it all. The whole situation was a mess, and he couldn’t see through any of it.
Maxwell tried to sort through everything that had happened lately. The poisoning. The incident at the banquet, where Mrs. Grayson had called Claire out for having plastic surgery, pointing to a scar as evidence. Claire’s claim that Madeline had sent someone to kill her. Then tonight, Julian nearly finishing the job himself.
One thing after another. It all added up to a tangled web. Suddenly, it hit him that there was something important he’d missed—Claire herself.
No matter what Mrs. Grayson said, Claire needed to be looked into.
Claire bit her lip, watching Maxwell closely when he didn’t answer right away. She was tense, voice barely above a whisper. “Maxwell, I...”
“I understand. Just get some rest,” he said, cutting her off. Then he walked out of the room without another word.
After the door closed, Claire’s expression changed. The tears dried up and her face turned cold.
Maxwell’s attitude was clear. He still had no intention of bringing her back to the Ballard family. She’d wanted to use this whole incident to get back in, but it wasn’t working.
