Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 599

Madeline pulled her knees in a little, shivering.

Julian glanced at her pajamas, just a thin set of long sleeves and pants. The house was temperature-controlled, but her hands and feet were still cold to the touch.

He frowned. “Your feet are freezing. Why aren’t you in bed?”

She held out her arms toward him.

A small smile played at Julian’s lips as he leaned in and picked her up. He carried her into the bedroom, holding her close.

Madeline rested her head against his chest, catching a faint, metallic scent on him. “You smell like blood.”

Julian’s brow furrowed for a second. He looked down at her. “You must be imagining things.”

“You really think you can fool me? Don’t forget what I do for a living. With perfumery and alternative medicine, I’m always around herbs and spices. My nose is way sharper than most people’s. You can’t hide anything from me.”

He set her down gently on the bed. Madeline pressed her lips together and looked up at him. “You kidnapped Claire and Helene.”

Julian raised an eyebrow. Now that she knew, he didn’t bother to deny it. “How did you find out?”

“Luke.”

Madeline hadn’t been trying to find out. Luke saw Julian leave and decided to follow, just in case. He watched Julian’s men take Claire and Helene away, then came straight back to tell her.

Julian nodded and pulled the blanket over her. “That’s right. I had them taken. There are things I need to sort out.”

Madeline nodded too, her eyes lingering on him for a long moment. “Okay. I get it.”

“You’re not even going to ask why?”

When Madeline heard the bathroom door close, she opened her eyes. Her gaze turned somber.

It was just as she’d thought. This had something to do with her mother, and that’s why Julian was hiding it.

Meanwhile, at the hospital…

Claire was so weak that Maxwell had her rushed straight to the emergency room. The wounds on her back had just been treated again, but she was drained of all her strength. Now she lay in bed, her face pale as paper.

Maxwell stood at her bedside and let out a long sigh.

Tears kept streaming down Claire’s face, soaking the white pillowcase beneath her.

“Maxwell, look at me. After all this, are you really still going to send me away? If I leave, I’ll be dead in no time. You know it.”
