“Alright, quit messing around and eat your breakfast. We need to head back soon.” Madeline added some more milk to each of the boys’ bowls.
She caught Julian watching her with a hint of silent pleading on his face. Madeline let out a helpless little laugh and got him some milk too. “You, too.”
Julian’s mood brightened instantly.
After breakfast, everyone started gathering their things. Julian had already arranged a private jet. Christian and Lucy would be flying back with them. Josh and Brady, too lazy to bother booking their own tickets, just decided to tag along.
Christian and Lucy were already at the airport when Madeline and Julian arrived with the kids in tow.
Christian took one look at Madeline and immediately pulled a face, but she was used to that and barely even blinked.
“Julian, Madeline,” Josh called out as he and Brady walked over.
Christian’s frown deepened. “Since everyone’s here, let’s get moving. Noah, Oliver, come over to Great-Grandpa.”
He reached for the boys, but they clung tight to Madeline’s hands, shaking their heads, almost in unison. “No, we want to stay with Mommy. We don’t like Great-Grandpa.”
They might have been little, but they understood more than anyone gave them credit for.
If Great-Grandpa didn’t like their mom, they wouldn’t like him. That was that.
Christian glared at Madeline accusingly. “Did you tell them to say that?”
Before Madeline could answer, Oliver piped up, arms crossed. “Mommy didn’t teach us anything. You’re always picking on her. Why should we like you?”
Christian’s expression darkened. “You’re my great-grandsons. You’re part of the Grayson family. How can you keep your distance from me?”
Noah met his gaze, steady as ever. “We’re Mommy’s sons first. Only then are we your great-grandsons.”
Oliver nodded with fierce determination. “Yeah, he’s right!”
Julian didn’t jump in, but gave the boys an approving look that said plenty.
Christian glanced from one face to another, his grip on his cane so tight his knuckles turned white.
He let out a frustrated snort, then stormed up the steps of the jet.
Lucy shot Madeline a tired, sympathetic glance, then followed him aboard.
Luke stepped closer, voice soft. “Did that old man give you trouble?”
Madeline looked at him, saw a shadow flicker across his eyes, and shook her head right away. “No, really. I’m fine.”
She knew he was capable, a bit hot-tempered, and she didn’t want him doing something reckless.
Luke cocked an eyebrow but didn’t push. “Alright, if you say so.” He started to back away, but then he staggered, his body swaying like he might collapse.
