In the hospital, Claire’s room was quiet except for the hum of machines and Carter’s tense voice on the phone.
“What? He’s already with Madeline?” Claire’s eyes flew wide. She clutched her blanket, knuckles white.
“Yes. Our people who were watching Madeline came back, and they saw him with her.”
Claire’s face twisted in frustration. “That’s impossible. How did he get to her so fast?”
Carter replied, calm and steady. “He doesn’t seem to remember the most important things yet. He hasn’t told Madeline anything. If he had, things wouldn’t be this quiet on their end. Also, we found out the poison in his system has started acting up. Without your antidote, there’s nothing to hold it back. Five days, tops. He knows it. He’ll have to come to you sooner or later.”
Claire’s gaze turned sharp. “You’re right. Remind him. Make sure he knows he needs me. And since those old fools from the Ballard family are determined to keep me out, we should get ready to leave for the Capital.”
“But what about your injuries...?”
“A scratch like this isn’t going to kill me. Just do what I said.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Claire’s eyes darkened, her lips curling into a cold smile. It felt good to have a plan again. Madeline was going back to the Capital. Once she did, there was no way she’d ever set foot in the Ballard family home again.
...
After touching down from the flight, Madeline followed Julian out to the parking lot. He opened the door to his car for her and then slid behind the wheel. Miles took the other car with Noah, Oliver, and Luke in the backseat.
They drove for a while. Eventually, Madeline realized they weren’t going toward the Grayson estate. Everything outside looked unfamiliar.
