“Mom, where’s Uncle Luke?” Oliver looked up, eyes wide with worry. “Why isn’t he with you today?”
Madeline’s face darkened. Just thinking of Luke leaving like that, not even letting her know, made her chest ache. “He’s being rebellious. Ran off on his own.”
Noah and Oliver both fell silent, staring at each other.
“Don’t you two ever pull something like that,” Madeline warned, fixing them with a stern look. “If you’ve got a problem, you talk to me first. Disappear without a word and you’ll be in big trouble when you come back, understand?”
Her anger sounded sharp, but underneath, her voice trembled with sadness.
“Mommy…” The boys called to her quietly, as if trying to comfort her.
Madeline snapped back to the present and sighed, shoulders slumping.
“Alright, I’ve got to head out for a bit. Oliver, could you please finish that thing for me as soon as possible?”
“Okay, Mom. I’ll have it ready for you by tomorrow,” Oliver replied, his tone serious.
…
Downstairs, Julian had come home early. Madeline walked right into him, too lost in her own thoughts to realize he was standing there.
Julian caught her before she could stumble, a quick smile curving his lips as he looked down at her.
Madeline rubbed her forehead and looked up at him. Their eyes met. He immediately noticed the worry etched all over her face.
“Rough day?” Julian asked, concern creeping into his voice.
Madeline nodded, her brow tight with stress. “Yeah. Jordan said if Luke doesn’t get medicine to control the poison in three days, he’s not going to make it.”
Julian grew serious, his eyes turning hard. “Where is he?”
“He left,” Madeline said softly. “I’m guessing he went to find Claire. She’s the only one with the antidote.”
She hesitated, then decided to tell him about the anonymous text she’d received.
