Madeline’s heart clenched so suddenly it almost hurt. She knew Julian was worried about her, but how could she just stand by and do nothing, knowing what would happen to Luke? She’d seen what happened to him when the poison took hold. It was awful, unbearable even. If she didn’t do something, he’d die a horrible death in just two days. He was only twenty, so young… his life shouldn’t end like this.
“Stay home. We’re not talking about this anymore,” Julian said, his voice leaving no room for argument. Madeline didn’t bother pushing back. She just turned around and walked straight upstairs.
Miles watched them both, his nerves fraying. He honestly thought they might start shouting any second.
“Boss, why don’t you just tell Ms. Monroe you’re doing all this for her?” Miles said.
Julian pulled out a cigarette, rolling it between his fingers for a second. He stopped himself before lighting it though, remembering Madeline hated the smell.
“You think she doesn’t know?” he replied, sounding a little tired.
“She’ll understand you’re just worried about her,” Miles tried again.
Julian’s eyes went even darker. “She knows, but she doesn’t agree.” He shook his head. “Madeline isn’t the kind of person who could just let someone die.”
But if she couldn’t do it… he would. One life, even Luke’s, couldn’t compare to her safety. If someone had to be the bad guy, let it be him. If she wanted to hate someone, she could hate him.
“Is Claire still in the city?”
“The people we talked to said she just showed up,” Miles answered.
“Find her,” Julian said, voice ice cold. “And keep an eye on Madeline. She doesn’t leave the house for the next two days.”
Miles looked miserable. “If you go through with this, and Luke really dies, even if Ms. Monroe understands, it’s going to change things between you.”
Julian looked up the stairs, something heavy shadowing his face. “Nothing is more important than keeping her safe.”
If Madeline went looking for Claire, she’d be risking her life for Luke’s. Claire had probably set a trap already, making it way too dangerous. He couldn’t let her do it.
