When Julian said he wasn't planning on getting back together, Madeline went still for a heartbeat. Then she let out a slow breath, her expression settling into a quiet, calm resolve. Now that she was blind, there was no telling if she’d ever see again. He was the future head of the Grayson family. If word got out that his wife was a blind woman, people would talk, and not in a good way.
Julian’s wife couldn’t have that kind of flaw.
So, if he didn’t want her back, that made sense. She got it.
“Oh…” One nurse glanced at the other, both looking awkward and a little guilty. This wasn’t how they thought things would go. They’d hoped they could nudge the two together, maybe spark something. Turns out, the couple had no plans to remarry.
Anyone could see the man loved her. It was in his eyes, no need for words. The kind of love that’s obvious to everyone around.
But here they were, divorced with no intention of fixing it.
What was the real reason? The nurses couldn’t help but wonder. Was it because she was blind now? Did that make all the difference?
Probably.
The nurses kept their heads down, focusing on busywork, their first impression of Julian slipping away. In the end, what did love matter if you couldn’t accept someone’s imperfections?
Julian took the glass Madeline had been sipping from and set it aside. He looked at her, his voice soft and low. “I just haven't done enough for her to want to be my wife again.”
Madeline’s head tilted gently, caught by surprise.
“We’ll get married again when she actually wants to give me another chance.” Julian’s voice wrapped around each word, warm and magnetic, settling in the room.
Listening to him, the nurses couldn’t help smiling to themselves. Maybe they’d judged him too quickly.
Catching the mood in the room, one of the nurses said, “Let’s go check on the doctor, see why it’s taking so long.” The two of them slipped away, leaving Madeline and Julian alone.
Madeline pressed her lips together. “You don’t have to say things just to make me feel better.”
Julian nodded. “Before I say anything else, there’s actually something I need to do.”
She hesitated. “What is it?”
