“I don’t need your money,” Madeline said, turning her face away.
Julian slid his hand through her hair, his touch gentle. “It’s not about compensation. I just want to give this to you. Does that sound better?”
She caught his hand, pulling it away. “Don’t try to talk me into taking your money. If I say no, I’ll look uptight and ungrateful.”
“Then don’t say no. Madeline, people change, but money doesn’t. What’s in your name will always be yours. You deserve that.”
“So, you’re saying you’re going to change?”
He shrugged, a crooked smile on his lips. “You never know.”
She couldn’t help a dry little laugh. “Wow. Appreciate the honesty, I guess.”
“I just mean, if something happens between us, or if life throws a curveball, I could disappear. But whatever’s in your account, that’ll always be there for you. It’s the only real guarantee I can give you right now.”
He never cared much for sweeping declarations about loving her forever. Anyone could say those words. They felt empty and she probably wouldn’t believe him anyway. Giving her everything he owned—that was real. That was something he could do for her.
Madeline was at her most vulnerable now, with her world gone dark. He just wanted to give her something solid to hold onto.
“Aren’t you worried you’ll regret this someday?” Madeline murmured.
“Not a chance.”
He had no idea he’d eventually eat those words.
She pressed her lips together, the hint of a smile ghosting there. “It’s a generous offer, but honestly, it’s too much. All those assets? I’d drown in them.”
Julian cut her off. “It’s settled.”
Madeline rolled her eyes affectionately. “Julian, you’re impulsive. If you ever regret it in the future, don’t you dare come crying to me.”
He pulled her closer, voice warm and low. “This isn’t impulsive. I’ve made my worst mistake already. I’m not making another one I’ll spend my life regretting.”
A quiet laugh slipped from her lips. “Alright then. I hope you remember what you said today, Mr. Grayson. I’ll hang onto your money… maybe pass it down to your two sons one day.”
“That’s for you, not them. They’re men, they can make their own way.”
“I can make my own way too,” Madeline shot back.
