The doctor pressed her fingers gently over Madeline’s side, her expression tightening with subtle concern. “Ms. Monroe, have you ever had surgery?”
Madeline opened her mouth to answer, but Julian jumped in quicker. “Why are you asking?”
The doctor looked between them, her voice cautious. “I just noticed a surgical scar here, Ms. Monroe. That’s all. Please don’t take it the wrong way, Mr. Grayson. I meant nothing by it.” She glanced at Julian’s tense face, trying to reassure him.
Julian’s brows drew together, the muscles along his jaw flexing. “What surgery are you talking about?”
Madeline’s hand trembled on the sheets.“It’s an old scar, from something I’ve already forgotten.” The doctor hesitated, lips parting as if to say more, but she seemed to think better of it. From where the scar was, she could guess what kind of surgery it had been. No one forgets something that serious. The message was clear—Madeline wasn’t interested in talking about it.
Picking up on the tension, the doctor lowered her head and quietly finished bandaging Madeline’s wound. She wrapped things up quickly, leaving behind a few instructions before heading out with her nurses.
Julian watched her go, then turned back to Madeline, helping her settle against the pillows. “Are you keeping something from me?”
She stared up at the ceiling, her voice flat. “What are you talking about?”
“That surgery.” His eyes locked on her, not letting up. “You really expect me to buy that you just forgot?”
Madeline’s lips pressed into a thin line. “That’s what I said. It’s been years. I forgot.”
Julian sighed and dragged a chair up close to her bed, sitting right at her side. “Do you honestly think I’ll believe that?”
She fell quiet, folding into herself.
He waited, but she gave him nothing.
