The villa’s main gate code hadn’t changed. Madeline walked right in, the kids at her side.
“Mommy, I don’t think Daddy’s home,” Oliver said, peering into the quiet hallway.
Madeline checked her watch. “He should be finishing work soon. Let’s wait for him.”
No sooner had she spoken than a maid hurried over, eyebrows furrowed. “Who are you? How did you get in here?”
Madeline turned, more confused than anything. “What do you mean? The code worked—I came in with it.”
“That’s not what I asked. Who are you? You can’t just stroll in here.”
She studied the woman, realizing her face was new. Madeline stayed patient. “My name’s Madeline. This is my home.”
The maid gave her a once-over, clearly unimpressed. “Your home? That’s a good one. There’s always someone thinking she’s the next Mrs. Grayson. Get real. You need to leave now before I call the police.”
Oliver stepped forward, standing tall. “This is our house. Julian is our dad. You can call whoever you want, but we’re not leaving. We’re just waiting for Dad.”
A flicker of annoyance crossed the maid’s face. She looked Oliver up and down, sneering. “I’ve never heard of Mr. Grayson having kids. Where’d you two come from?”
Madeline’s eyes narrowed. Annoyance prickled through her calm. She could brush off the mistake, but that was crossing a line.
“Watch your mouth. You don’t know who we are. If Julian finds out you’re talking like this, you might not keep your job.”
The maid scoffed. “Oh, threatening me now? Go on, let Mr. Grayson fire me if you’re really all that.”
Madeline’s patience wore thin. She reached inside her purse, took out a bundle of cash—enough to cover a month’s wages—and set it on the table. “You’re done here. Take that and go.”
The maid just curled her lip. “You really think you can fire me?”
Luke stepped up, an easy grin on his face. He grabbed the cash, stuffed it into the maid’s hand, and took her by the arm. Without a second thought, he marched her outside and shut the door.
He came back inside, shaking his head. “All good.”
“Thank you,” Madeline replied, giving him a grateful look.
She glanced around. Every face in the room was unfamiliar. Why would Julian replace all the staff?
“When will Mr. Grayson be back?” she asked.
Seeing their uncertainty, she added, “If you’re worried, don’t be. I let myself in. If anything goes wrong, it’s on me.”
That settled it. The maids got busy, ferrying their things upstairs.
Outside, the maid Luke had thrown out paced angrily, pulling out her phone. “Alianna? There’s some crazy woman in the villa. She called herself…Madeli, I think.”
On the other end, Alianna narrowed her eyes. “Madeline?”
“Yeah, that’s what she said.”
Alianna’s grip tightened on her phone. Madeline was back.
“I’ve got it,” she said, ending the call. She hurried off to find her mother, needing advice.
“Mom, Madeline’s back. She’s come to the Capital—and she’s staying at the villa with Julian.”
Jane’s expression soured, her gaze sharp. “Already? It’s only been a year since she left and she’s back so soon.”
The two of them had moved out after the last confrontation at the Ballard house, telling Ray they didn’t want to cause trouble for Shelly and would rather stay in the Capital for a while. Ray agreed and set them up with a place to stay.
