When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 321

“Yes.” Nancy glanced at Nelly. “Because this time, I’m not picking you.”

She wasn’t picking Nelly. She was finally choosing herself.

Nelly’s lips curled into a small smile. Everything was playing out just as she’d expected.

Deep down, she knew the two of them were the same kind of people.

Nancy could never bring herself to completely cut Jonah off, not even now. Even her attempts at revenge felt clumsy.

She was never meant to be anyone’s pawn.

A sudden noise came from upstairs.

Nelly looked up, but Nancy reached for her arm. “It’s getting late. I’ll see you at the office tomorrow.”

“Okay.” Nelly didn’t say anything else. Their eyes met, and some truths didn’t need to be spoken.

Once Nelly was gone, Rudy came running down the stairs.

He had heard every word. Without missing a beat, he grabbed Nancy’s wrist, ripped the contract from her hand, and tore it to pieces.

“What is wrong with you? Did that bitch get in your head again? Does she have you wrapped around her finger with just a few words?”

Rudy was furious. Nancy just watched him quietly, letting him finish his outburst.

“You heard it all, didn’t you?” Her voice was calm. “I’m still working with Nelly.”

“Do you honestly think she’ll cut ties with Jonah and Felix for you? Don’t be stupid, Nancy. Nelly can’t win. Even if she did turn on Felix for your sake, she’d end up stuck in the Watson family with nowhere to go.”

Rudy pressed his hand to Nancy’s head, so angry he looked like he might explode.

He was shaking with rage, like he wanted to swallow her whole.

But Nancy didn’t fight back. No matter what he said to provoke her, she stayed calm.

“Rudy, I’m tired.”

He’d probably just get even angrier and try to hurt her.

But Nancy wasn’t scared now.

She didn’t feel the need to fight or act strong anymore. Suddenly, she just felt... free.

The silence was heavy between them, but when Nancy said she hated him, Rudy felt a roar in his ears.

He’d always known she hated him.

But now, it felt so different.

“Nancy, do you have any idea what happens if you choose Nelly?”

Rudy tried to sound menacing, but he just couldn’t muster the energy. He wanted to be angry, but it wouldn’t come. He struggled for words, finally managing only a weak question.

“I know.”
