The assistant was frazzled. After everything Nancy had just gone through, all that drama and gossip swirling around her, she was bound to be on edge. Tonight’s event was huge. It wasn’t out of the question for Nancy to just snap and do something reckless.
“She wouldn’t,” Nelly shot back, not even pausing to consider it. Sure, the thought had crossed her mind. She’d wondered for a split second if Nancy might go behind her back again. But after spending the last couple of days together, seeing how Nancy had been, Nelly just couldn’t believe it. Something must have gone wrong.
When Nelly got back to the room, Brody was still there. “Why are you still here?” she asked, barely glancing at him. She was too busy to care, immediately picking up her phone to try Nancy’s number again. She’d already sent everyone out to look for her. There was no way Nancy could have gotten far in so little time. Someone must have seen her. With her looks, she stood out anywhere.
“Nancy’s the Watson family’s daughter. Who would even dare mess with her?” Brody’s voice drifted across the room, and Nelly’s expression grew tense. No ordinary person would try anything with Nancy. The only people who might would be someone from the Watson family or someone desperate to keep her and Nancy from success.
And Nancy was careful. She wouldn’t just wander off with a stranger, not in a hotel full of people and bodyguards. If she agreed to meet someone, it had to be someone she already trusted. It had to be Rudy.
If it was Rudy, Nelly wasn’t worried about Nancy getting hurt. But if Nancy missed the show, the whole night would fall apart. Why would Nancy run off to see Rudy now of all times? Was Nelly really about to be betrayed again?
Before Brody could say another word, Nelly had already started making calls again. She told their partners to send over a few more models, ones who fit the brand’s vibe and could possibly fill in for Nancy. The dresses Nancy was supposed to wear tonight were all specially made for her. Anyone else would struggle to pull them off.
“There’s no way you’ll find someone like Nancy on such short notice,” Brody pointed out, noticing how tense Nelly’s call was getting. Even if they managed to find someone, could they really expect her to take Nancy’s place and save the show? Everyone tonight was here for Nancy’s big moment. If they tried to swap her out, it would be a total disaster. The higher Nancy’s profile, the bigger the fallout if things went wrong.
“We’re out of options,” Nelly muttered, rubbing her forehead. She looked up and locked eyes with Brody. He didn’t say anything, but the look they shared said it all. They were both thinking the same thing.
