They were just suspects, which basically meant they were in the clear for now. Nicholas wasted no time and got the best lawyer in town. For him, solving this was almost effortless. Still, what really worried Nicholas was Sheila.

He hesitated a moment, then said, “Ms. Olson, I know you’re a good person. But your friend is mixed up in this kind of case. It’s probably best if you keep your distance from her in the future.”

Nicholas was gentle with his words, and Sheila played along, pretending to look troubled. “Honestly, Sheila’s just such a poor soul. I never thought something like this would happen.”

“I just don’t want your kindness to be taken advantage of,” Nicholas said. He’d seen enough of the world to know how people operated.

“But don’t worry. I’ll take care of it. I’ll give her some money to keep things quiet, and when this is all over, I’ll arrange for her to leave the country. You won’t have to worry about it anymore.”

Sheila stared at him, completely stunned. She hadn’t even figured out what to do yet, but Nicholas had already thought of everything and solved it for her.

“Mr. Watson, you’re so good to me. I don’t even know how I can ever thank you...”

“No need for that. If anything, I should be thanking you, Ms. Olson.”

He smiled, said a few more reassuring words, and then asked the driver to take them home for dinner.

But as soon as Sheila realized she’d have to see April, she quickly spoke up. “I’m really not feeling great today. If I see April like this, she’ll just worry. I don’t want to trouble you or your family.”
