Brody was still lounging on the sofa, glancing at his watch. “Nothing urgent at work today. Let’s pick up Carrie together after you finish.”
Before Nelly could say no, he added, “We should keep up appearances. The press conference just ended and everyone’s watching us. The reporters need to see something real.”
Nelly hesitated, not thrilled with the idea. “I still have work to do.”
It was true. The day was far from over and, as the founder of a startup, she was way busier than Brody.
“I can wait,” Brody replied, his tone completely calm and patient.
She shot him a look, didn’t bother to answer, and grabbed her files before heading out of the office.
The moment she opened the door, she noticed a bunch of people hovering outside. They scattered as soon as they saw her.
Her assistant was the only one who stuck around, nervously keeping up as she listed off the day’s important tasks.
Nelly slipped into another conference room to get some work done. She opened her laptop and glanced at the latest online buzz.
Just as she expected, she and Brody’s appearance at the Watson family press conference was trending everywhere.
“Ms. Watson’s First Public Appearance. Couple Shuts Down Rumors.”
“Never’s Secret Boss is the Watson Family’s Billion-Dollar Heiress.”
“Garland Inc. CEO Publicly Spoils His Wife with a Sweet Kiss.”
The headlines were getting more ridiculous by the second. Even though the media was all about showing them as the perfect couple, reading those stories just made Nelly more annoyed.
Still, she couldn’t deny that it was working.
Stock prices for both the Watson family company and Garland Inc. were climbing. What started as negative press had turned into free advertising. Never’s market value and orders were skyrocketing. New partners were lining up to work with them.
“You and your husband are honestly such a good match,” her assistant said quietly, glancing at Nelly while she worked. “I thought so the last time I saw him, but now it’s actually true…”
Her cheeks turned pink as she spoke.
She tried to hide her smile, but she couldn’t help herself.
