Year Five: The Perfect Goodbye Plan novel Chapter 101

Silvia recognized the looks her colleagues in the design department were giving her. She’d seen those same skeptical glances before, back at her old job. Back then, she’d silenced their doubts with her ability. This time, she was determined to do it again.

She ignored the mistrust in the room and instead greeted everyone with a warm, open smile. “I’m looking forward to working with all of you. If I make any mistakes, I hope you’ll let me know and show me the ropes.”

Her humility softened the team’s initial impression. They looked at her, their smiles polite but strained, and offered a lukewarm welcome.

As the new design assistant, Silvia wasn’t assigned to any major projects yet. But no one dared ask her to do the grunt work, either. By the end of the day, she realized she’d barely done anything at all—she’d just sat at her desk, idle, while the hours ticked by.

As the workday wound down, Amy approached her desk. She wore a pleasant smile. “How are you settling in, Silvia? Was it a tiring first day?”

“Tiring?” Silvia zipped up her bag and frowned a little, her tone wry. “Not at all, Director. Honestly, I barely did anything today.”

Amy sighed, a little embarrassed. “That’s not surprising. The design department’s been pretty quiet lately, and since you just started, there wasn’t a project ready for you yet. But don’t worry, something will come along soon.”

After all, Silvia was Mr. Finn’s sister. Even if there weren’t any available projects, if she so much as mentioned wanting something to do, Finn would probably create a project just for her.

Silvia understood the implication. Her eyes flickered, a hint of resignation glimmering behind her smile.

At her last job at Shipley & Co., people had written her off as just a pretty face with no real skills. Here, at The Ashford Group, her colleagues saw her as a pretty face with powerful connections—and kept their distance.

If she wanted to change how they saw her, she’d have to prove herself through her work.
