Marshall became incensed upon hearing that and slapped Dennis across the face again. “You b*stard. Stop making excuses for yourself. You’ve brought shame upon our family. This is not how you’ve been brought up. We’ve taken an oath to protect the Queen and the royal family and this is what you do?”
Dennis’ face was filled with anguish and he was temporarily rendered mute. Marshall was still not done with him as he pointed at his face and shouted, “How could you abandon Princess Angela at such an important moment? If I don’t punish you today, I’m not fit to be your father!”
Then he shouted to the guards outside, “Guards, take him away and give him one hundred lashes by caning!”
To be honest, Marshall could not bear for Dennis to go through the pain of a hundred lashes, but if he did not do this, then a fate worse than that would await Dennis, for the Queen would definitely sentence him to a harsher punishment. When Dennis heard what Marshall said, he collapsed to the ground. The thought of a hundred lashes caused his face to be drained of all color.
A few guards appeared and dragged him away. Soon, the sound of Dennis’ screams echoed from outside. Marshall kept a calm face throughout all this.
“Your Majesty, it’s all my fault for not raising him right. I’ll make sure he learns his lesson. We humbly ask for your forgiveness for what happened yesterday,” Marshall said to the Queen as he took a step forward.
The Queen contemplated silently. In the next second, she turned to face Angeline and asked, “What do you say, Angeline?”
Their sisterly bond was deep and she was furious at Angeline’s close brush with death. She would only let this matter slide if Angeline said so.
Angeline bit her lips lightly while giving it some thought. Then she smiled and said, “Why don’t we ask Darren?”
At this, everyone, including the Queen and Marshall, was surprised. Marshall, especially, was looking Darryl up and down with mixed feelings as he wondered how a lowly guard could be so highly regarded by Prince Angeline.
All the other mayors were also checking him out with undisguised curiosity. ‘Why would Princess Angeline ask for a guard’s opinion?’
