It was at night.
The roses outside the window had stopped blooming, and the night was quiet. The windows of every house were closed again. After watching the bustling scene, they continued to do their own things, but the smell of gunpowder could still be smelt faintly in the air.
There was no light in the room. Emily stood there motionless, looking into the distance through the window.
She thought of Simon's disappointed face after she refused him.
Looking down, she saw that the candles had already been put out. The cleaner was cleaning up and throwing them all into the trash can.
There was a noise from porch, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps coming from afar. It seemed that the person had been waiting there. Emily turned around and looked into the distance in the darkness. At this moment, the original bright eyes looked very gloomy now.
Even his expression was stiff.
Emily knew that it was hurtful for any manto be rejected from a proposal .
"Why don't you want to marry me?"
Her voice was low and deep. It seemed that he was gritting his teeth.
Emily turned her head and looked out of the window. Not long ago, the fireworks bloomed in the night sky like roses, as if they were still lingering there. They were so beautiful and bright that she had never seen a firework with the pattern of roses.
She said slowly, "Simon, it's not that I am happy every time I see fireworks."
Simon's big hand in the pocket was tightly clenched, and the diamond ring rubbed his palm.
Emily met his gaze and continued to say softly, "You came all the way here. I know what you're thinking, but it's impossible!"
Simon took a large step forward and asked just like before, "Why is it impossible?"
The light was dim, but Emily could see his features. Simon was staring at her and said, "Emily, I know that you are disheartened at losing our baby, but we can have a child again. We can entrust our love for this child to our later children. If one isn't enough, we can have two, three, or even more children!"
Simon continued to walk forward, closer to her.
His Adam's apple moved, and his breath was very heavy. He tried to persuade her. "Sean and Addy have divorced. I told you that she had returned to Newley City long ago after regaining her freedom. Nothing will affect our relationship. You..."
Emily suddenly interrupted him and asked, "What about the future?"
"In the future?" Simon was startled.
Emily's eyelashes fluttered, and she stared at him for a moment. "Even if she returns to Newley City, or goes to any country, but what if she happens to meet a second Sean? Will you leave her alone?"
Simon was stunned.
He really had not thought about this problem.
Even if he had not thought about it, he could not answer it at this time. He might have lost his love with Addy for a long time, but he was responsible for the guilt. It was a conscience debt. If something like this really happened, he dared not deny that he would not...
When Emily saw his silence, she pursed her lips as she had expected.
She was really disappointed now.
She lowered her eyelids and looked at the big hand tightly holding her. She could see the blue veins underneath her skin. Then she suddenly said, "Simon, I love you."
Simon was truly shocked, with his eyelashes trembling.
There was suspicion on his face, as if he was hallucinating. His eyes were full of incredulity and surprise, so much so that he didn't know what to do.
She loved him...
She had never said that!
Simon felt his blood rush up from the soles of his feet. He was too excited to say a word. The heart in his chest almost jumped out. He was very excited but there was a faint uneasiness.
His heart was beating widly. Before he could recover from his ecstasy, Emily looked up at him again.
"When I thought about escaping from Ice city, but in fact, I couldn't leave you, because I love you."
"But now I don't love you anymore. Even if I didn't come here, I wouldn't change my idea. I don't... love you now. Do you understand?"
Such a transition was a huge blow to Simon.
He felt like a person who had struggled to climb up from the cliff. As soon as he popped his head out, he was easily kicked back into the abyss before he could cheer.
The proposal was almost his final bet. He thought that he could change her mind. Even if he couldn't, at least she would reconsider the decision to live apart from him...
Being stunned, Simon stood there for a long time.
Emily's heart had already been dead for a very long time.
