Meanwhile, in a particular hospital room.
“A bit of a low–grade fever, and the wound is a bit infected, more severe than yesterday. You might have to stay in the hospital for a few more days,” said Jasper to Naomi after examining the injuries on
her hands
He had not expected Naomi’s condition to be this serious. It was not just the injury to her spine, but her hand had also worsened. Naomi’s complexion was noticeably worse than yesterday, clearly lacking energy and appearing somewhat weary due to the fever
She had been uncomfortable since late last night because of the pain in her hand and back. Her sleep had been restless. Charles had been by her side in the hospital room, sensing her discomfort. Upon checking, he discovered she had a fever and promptly sought the on–duty doctor.
The doctor prescribed painkillers and fever reducers, as well as administered intravenous fluids. Fortunately, Naomi gradually fell asleep.
It was not until this morning that Jasper came for rounds.
Naomi’s eyebrows furrowed at Jasper’s diagnosis and asked, “Will I have to stay a few more days.
Based on yesterday’s situation, she was expected to spend at most three days in the hospital, and her parents likely thought three days would be sufficient. Any longer, and they would worry.
“It’s hard to say. It depends on your recovery,” Jasper replied.
Naomi pursed her lips, choosing not to say anything. She did not want to stay in the hospital for too long, nor did she want her parents to know about what happened last night. She especially did not want them to worry about her.
Charles understood what Naomi was thinking and said, “Can the fever go down today? Will the inflammation improve?”
Looking at Naomi’s pale face, Jasper responded, “The fever should subside, but I can’t be certain about the inflammation. Besides, I’ll be heading back to Willowstown soon, and Naomi will need a different attending physician.
“But don’t worry,
I’ve already arranged for the change in the attending physician. They won’t be any less capable than me.”
Naomi hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Okay.”
A smile appeared on her face. “I’m sorry to have troubled you these past two days.”
Observing Naomi’s smile, Jasper recalled the conversation with his Scott last night. Thinking about Scott’s expression at that time, and looking at Naomi’s condition, he felt a bit puzzled.
He was sure Scott cared a great deal about Naomi. However, judging by Naomi’s demeanor, she did

not seem to reciprocate those feelings toward Scott. Moreover, Naomi’s sudden deterioration made him think something had happened, but her appearance contradicted that assumption.
Looking back at Scott, it seemed as if something significant had happened.
At that moment, he felt a strong sense that Scott and Naomi were in two extremely distant worlds.
“No trouble at all. It’s all part of my job. I’ll communicate with your attending physician here and stay updated on your condition, trying my best to help you recover sooner.”
“It’s okay, go ahead with your work. There’s no need to worry about things here.”
As Jasper looked at Naomi, who did not seem to be in great health except for her complexion, he felt even more convinced that Scott and Naomi were not on the same page.
He had something else to say but found himself unable to express himself. In the end, he nodded and said, “Have a good rest, then.”
“Okay.”
Jasper instructed Charles on a few matters, to which Charles took note of diligently. Then, Jasper escorted him out of the ward.
Neither of them had expected to meet in this way, under these circumstances. Jasper did not ask, and Charles did not say.
Some things were better left understood in everyone’s hearts.
“Thank you, Dr. Lawson.”
“It’s alright. This is my duty.”
If it were not for Jasper, this would not have anything to do with him. Charles knew this, but he still felt grateful. “Thank you.”
“No need to see me off. I’ll be alright.”
“Okay.”
The elevator opened, and Jasper walked in.
