“Remi, I’m sorry. I won’t ask anymore. If you don’t want to talk about it, then we can leave it all behind.” 

Remington’s eyelashes fluttered slightly as he took Lizetta’s hand, planting a couple of soft kisses on her knuckles. 

His expression had settled down a bit, and he wrapped his arm around Lizetto’s waist, his lips barely parting as he began to speak 

“Quinn and Evelina were never an item. It was at a party where Quinn accidentally got drugged by a rival, and Evelina just happened to be there. That night, Evelina was forced into a situation she didn’t choose, and somehow, she ended up pregnant. Evelina didn’t want to keep the baby initially, but the Hawthome Group faced some financial troubles. In exchange for her agreement to keep the child, I invested in the Hawthorne Group and provided Evelina with resources to boost her career in the entertainment Industry” 

Because of all this, Remington felt a sense of guilt towards Evelina. 

After all, being forced to carry and give birth to the child of an assailant was not something any woman would find joy 

Moreover the child would grow up fatherless. 

Lizetta was stunned, having not expected the story to unfold like this. 

No wonder she always felt Evelina lacked genuine maternal affection towards her unborn child. 

If she truly loved the baby, why would she behave so recklessly, even to the point of pushing Lizetta towards the pool once? 

“Barbara and Martin don’t know about the child?” 

“Martin knows. Barbara’s already in the late stages of lung cancer She was already not doing well, and then she had to face the grief of losing her son. She couldn’t take any more bad news. Evelina had a risky pregnancy at one point, almost miscarried, so Martin and i decided to keep it from Barbara. We were worried that if Evelina couldn’t keep the baby, it would just be another blow to her, possibly one she couldn’t recover from.” 

Remington’s voice trailed off, laden with worry 

Evelina’s baby was tied to Quinn’s death, and even more so to Martin’s unethical decision to keep Quinn’s death a secret for the sake of business 

Barbara couldn’t afford any more surprises because of this child 

And Quinn, who had lived honorably, would have his memory tamished by the scandalous circumstances surrounding Evelina’s child. 

With so much at stake, revealing the child’s paternity would unravel too many secrets. 

Lizetta hadn’t realized Barbara was in the late stages of lung cancer, recalling how frail and aged she appeared last time they met, even needing a wheelchair 

“So that’s why you went along with your grandmother’s wishes to have Evelina undergo amniocentesis. You were worried the child might not be Quinn’s because Evelina had an affair.”
