“SO, what’s your decision, Zoe?” Cindy asked the next day at their work. It’s still early, so they’re sitting while sipping coffee paired with bread.
Zoe shook her head. “I don’t know. I am distracted. I can’t think clearly.”
Cindy heaved a deep sigh. “You know what… I experienced falling in love too, but it was unrequited; he didn’t know about it until one day. I confessed—even if I knew that he would reject me, I still told my true feelings. Because the more I keep it myself, the more I get distracted and even get weak.”
Cindy reached for her left hand. “Love is all about taking risks, Zoe. You must know that.”
Zoe pressed her lips and nodded.
Cindy sighed. “In the end, it doesn’t matter what other people think about whether or not taking risks for love is a good idea; we do it anyway. The most potent weapon a person can wield is fear. Fear of being harmed, ridiculed, making mistakes, failing, and not achieving our objective. It’s possible that fear keeps us from pursuing our goals and aspirations, or it may keep us from trusting those who care about our well-being.”
Cindy could feel Zoe. And as a friend, she was very much willing to help her. To gain her courage and to be true to herself.
“Zoe… Neither your first kiss nor a breakup would teach you those important lessons. If it weren’t for the decision we made to put everything on the line for love, all of those rejections and moonlight dinners would be a distant memory. You must put your faith in Him, trusting that He will catch you if you fall and that He will be there for you in both your happy and sad times. That he will do everything in his power to ensure your safety while also doing everything in your power to make him feel like the coolest dude ever is a mutually beneficial relationship that can only end in love.”
“I understand.”
Cindy let go of her and sipped into her glass. When she put down her cup, she continued. “Allow others to see you for who you truly are, rather than for what you hope they see you as. Never let fear stop you from opening your heart to the person who is willing to make sacrifices for you. Love means risking everything, taking risks, getting hurt, getting back up, and trying again. Love is a two-way street, so don’t forget that he’s doing the same thing by letting you get to know him for who he truly is.”
“Fear is still evading my heart, Cindy. I don’t know what to do anymore. I hurt him. I rejected him many times—”
“He will understand, Zoe. Talk to him and clear things between you two. Confess. Let out what you truly feel. In order to truly love someone, you must be able to let them see you in your most vulnerable state and be completely comfortable with that. However, love is not always a frightening experience. When things seem to be going well in love, all of a sudden, you’re lying on the ground, not knowing what hit you. Every one of us has experienced some form of heartbreak that makes us wonder if love is worth the suffering, but true love is worth every moment of suffering.”
Zoe let out a soft chuckle. “I didn’t know that you know a lot of things in terms of love.”
Cindy rolled her eyes at me. “I told you, I’ve been there, done that. But not as deep as your situation, though, and I am just in high school at those times.”
“What if I am just overthinking? What if Helios doesn’t truly love me? Cindy, I’m a little bit scared….”
“It’s inevitable that love will arouse some level of anxiety because, at the core, we’re all seeking the same thing. A person who brightens your day, someone who sees all the things you despise about yourself and loves them anyway. Aspiration is that you will find someone who will put in as much effort as you do and who will be able to love you as much. Be careful not to let one person turn your heart to stone. The best thing you can do is embrace it and not try to see the bad in it. The WHAT IFs? should not keep you from experiencing happiness.”
Cindy bites on her bread and chews it before speaking again. “A person’s life can be ruined by their fear. It can ruin every opportunity you have to do anything in your life. Don’t let that fear keep you from finding true happiness. When you’ve given so much of yourself to others, you’ll finally get the love back that you’ve given to yourself. This is going to be everything you’ve ever wished for and more. Yes, love can be risky, but you have to take a chance if you want something in life. Those who are brave enough to take a chance on love will be glad they did because they will have found the right person who speaks to them in a way they never expected.”
Tears clouded Zoe’s eyes. She couldn’t believe that she was hearing those comforting words from Cindy. Her every word seems to mend shattered pieces inside her.
Her words are so meaningful and full of power. And all of it is true.
Zoe shouldn’t let fear evade her heart. She should be true to herself… especially to her feelings.
“So, Zoe, my friend. Talk to Helios. Don’t be afraid. Don’t let someone will hinder your feelings. The more important thing is… you will accept that you truly love him. So, what if he asked for your hand? Why don’t you try? Get married. Besides, there’s a divorce—Ouch!”
Zoe reached for Cindy and slammed her left shoulder.
“You look serious earlier, and now, you’re bluffing again? I don’t know if I will believe your words earlier.”
Cindy shrugged her shoulder. “Well, it’s up to you if you will follow it or not. Besides, in the end, it was you, who will make the final decision,” she said.
