He was a man with principles. After leaving his wife, Noah searched for his mother near the hotel. Luckily, h e found her. His mother was staying in a small motel that cost only twenty dollars a night.
"Mother, you're so capable. You can ride the bus all the way to South City alone, and you can even find me." Noah hugged his mother, tears flowing down his cheeks.
His mother laughed. "Silly child! I'm only in my fifties, I'm not that old. I have a hunched back, that’s all, and some white hair. You can’t even call women my age living here in the city as old ladies! I'm literate too. I used the money you sent me and first went to town, then I rode the bus to the county town, and then took a taxi to the railway station. Just like that, step by step. You don't think I can make my way to the big city?"
Noah looked at his mother sadly. His old mother must have used her entire life's wisdom. She had never left the mountains. The letters she knew, she learned together with him when he was in grade school. When he graduated from grade school, his mother obtained the literacy level of a grade school student. When he graduated from middle school, his mother obtained the literacy level of a middle school student. Right until he attended high school and stayed in the dorms, his mother's literacy levels then stopped there. But even so, this was enough for her to be able to read and
understand simple phrases when she was travelling outside of her home.
His mother dragged her hunched back and weak body and trudged all the way to South City just to take a single look at her son's wedding.
"My dear son, now that I saw your wedding, I'm satisfied and I'm going home now. Don't worry about me, I can take good care of myself. I came to South City to visit you and also prove to you that I can take care of myself," his mother said kindly.
However, Noah shook his head. "Mother, we are living i n different worlds. The saying is right, couples must b e a perfect match for each other in order to get married. We are not, so we can't understand how her mind works. Deep down in her mind, she never treated us as equals, as human beings. There's no point in marrying her."
All of a sudden, tears flowed down his mother’s cheeks. "My dear son, nothing is better to me than seeing you getting married and starting your own family. It is my biggest wish to see you get married and start your own family. I'm delighted right now. I don’t feel sad, or wronged at all. What would you do? Don’t tell me you plan to abandon your pregnant wife and divorce her?"
Noah said, "I already told her I want a divorce."
"No, you can't, I don't agree! You bastard! The child in her stomach is yours, how can you be so ruthless!"
"Mother! She doesn't even see us as equals, as human beings!"
His mother gave him a slap. "You are a man, why can’t you bear even this! Go back there! Go back there right now! Apologize to your wife and admit your mistakes! Don't affect your unborn child."
Noah roared, "Mother!"
"Go back! Go back right now, don’t destroy the perfect family that you have! I'm fine! I can take care of myself! I'm not sad now but I'll be depressed if you remain a bachelor for the rest of your life!"
Noah remained steadfast in his decision. "Mother, I won’t go back! If she gives birth to the child, I'll bring the child back to our village. I can run a small business back home. The three of us will live together for the rest of our lives. I’m not remarrying."
Tears of despair rolled down his mother’s cheeks. Right at that moment, someone knocked on the door t o the small motel room that his mother stayed in.
Noah thought it was a motel worker, so he stood up and opened the door. Only after he opened the door, did he see that the two people standing in front of him were his in-laws.
"Since your mother is here, why not come home and have some tea?" His father-in-law said to him in a polite and yet distant tone.
