Just as Aaron was about to say something, Mia yelled, "Dad, Andre, grub's ready!"
……
After dinner, Andre gave Mia and her parents some time to catch up. Later in the afternoon, he took Mia and left. As they were leaving, Mia sat in the passenger seat, rolled down the window, and watched her parents through the rear-view mirror as they faded into the distance.
Her eyes were moist, and she kept rubbing them with her hand. Andre could feel it. He stepped on the gas, speeding out of Whispersong Village, and not until the cream-colored building was out of sight did Mia roll up the window and Andre slow down.
Andre asked, "Do you always talk this much at home?"
"Not always. This is your first time at my place and my parents' first time meeting you. As their daughter and your wife, if I don't keep the conversation going, it would be awkward for both of you."
This was the first time Andre heard this girl call herself his wife. Looking at her face, it was like a child claiming to be an adult, with the real adult standing by and watching.
But she was right. She was the woman he'd married.
"Anyway, I need to thank you."
For the first three days of their marriage, this was the first calm and peaceful conversation they'd had.
Mia knew how to be polite and she showed politeness when it was deserved. And today, Andre had earned it.
"I thought you didn't catch a word of what I said last night."
Andre swallowed, "I would've looked it up."
"You should've said that earlier then, I could've hit the hay sooner, instead of pestering you for two hours and then getting kicked out."
As Andre drove, he glanced at her, was this girl complaining that he'd kept her from sleeping?
They returned to Cedillo Mansion.
