Mia cracked a small smile, a tad embarrassed as she explained the morning's mix-up, "...my husband and I totally forgot."
Hearing this, Hansen added, "She even wanted to give me another shot..."
After Hansen's excited explanation, Naomi couldn’t believe it either. "we have had enough rest today. We'll stay here tonight, you and Andre should go home and rest."
"Don't try to send us away," Mia protested. "Andre and I have decided to stay at the hospital with dad. We already agreed." The memory of the bloodshot eyes in Naomi's earlier made Mia's heart ache.
Last night was the toughest. Their dad was on an IV and needed constant care. Her brother and his family stayed with him at the hospital. Under no circumstances could they stay another night.
Hansen urgently waved them off. "Mia, I know you're a good girl. But you and Andre should go home and get some rest. It's the thought that counts, you don't need to stay here."
Mia stood her ground. "That's not happening! I want you to really feel the love that my husband and I have for you. Besides, you have two sons. You can't let Bruce and Naomi shoulder everything. People who know you understand the father-daughter relationship between you and my Naomi. Those who don't might think you're playing favorites, getting sick and letting only Bruce’s family take responsibility. Where does that leave the dignity of Andre and me? I'm your daughter-in-law, too, I need a good reputation too. I want to have a good relationship with you."
At Mia's words, everyone in the room burst out laughing. Her blunt honesty was refreshing and it made Bruce feel good knowing his younger brother was willing to share the burden of their father's illness.
Naomi felt a warm glow inside. Mia's words, about Hansen treating her like a daughter, had brought them closer.
Andre smiled. His wife had voiced his thoughts. Hansen was the happiest of all.
Her words didn't damage the relationship between Mia and Naomi, there was no sibling resentment, and it even earned him a reputation for treating his elder daughter-in-law like a daughter, giving him great dignity. If her words were still refused, it would be unbelievable.
Hansen said sarcastically, "Andre is too busy."
Mia responded for her husband, "when it comes to caring for his father, he's not busy. What's more important than family?"
"Alright, alright, I can't win against you. Stay if you want to stay. Bruce and Naomi were truly exhausted last night."
Mia was triumphant. She winked at her husband.
Andre laughed helplessly, a mixture of amusement and deep affection in his smile. His wife's actions were becoming more and more satisfying.
Bruce and Naomi sat there for a while. Hansen steered the conversation towards his younger daughter-in-law. "We've never had someone like this in our family, who can leave people speechless with just a few words. Today, even Jillian got a taste of it."
Naomi perked up immediately. She asked Mia, "How did you handle her?"
"I slapped her twice," she said nonchalantly.
"Are you hurt?" Naomi asked.
Mia shook her head, "Andre and dad were with me, I was fine. She didn't dare to fight back."
Naomi still felt her daughter-in-law was a bit hot-tempered.
"Naomi, I'm actually very gentle."
"Oh." She didn't believe it.
"Don't be skeptical. My husband always says I'm his little kitty."
Andre teased his wife, "A wild cat's scratch hurts the most."
"Honey." Mia started to whine.
Andre said, "I didn't criticize you in front of others."
Mia poked her husband's shoulder, "you are such a bully."
The hospital room was filled with laughter.
