This was the first time Charlotte had endured the heat from the kitchen, and she couldn’t help feeling dehydrated. “I don’t feel so good. I don’t want to eat.”

“Let’s go to your room. I will call the doctor to check on you,” Alpha Nick said, worried. Charlotte felt alive by the genuineness of his concern for her and explained,

“No need for the doctor. I will be fine after some rest.” It was also a great opportunity to be away from Tom to

avoid making things awkward between them.

Charlotte did not want anything or anyone to ruin her going to the gala awards. Even if Alpha Nick had not marked her, they were going together as a couple, and the world would know they were mates. That was soothing to her wounds of not getting mated, but she wasn’t going to give up anyway.

“I insist. You have to eat,” Alpha Nick said seriously, and an idea formed in Charlotte’s mind as she was now living

in the Alpha’s chamber.

“I want to eat in my room.”

Alpha Nick didn’t see anything wrong with it since she mentioned not feeling well. “You go up. I will bring your food.” Charlotte smiled with satisfaction and left, but Tom was uncomfortable as his dark gaze remained on her

back.

Alpha Nick had the maids pack the serving for two and told Tom, “I will eat with her upstairs. We can chat later.”

Tom nodded his head but did not seem happy. Beta Dustin noticed something odd and said, “I see the way you look at the Alpha’s mate. I hope you are not crushing on her, or you will leave this pack without your head on your neck,”

Tom chuckled, cursing Charlotte internally for making him like this. He couldn’t bear to see her with another man, and she just had to keep acting like she was in love with Alpha Nick. Did she not know how jealous it made. him? “Why are you talking like that?”

Beta Dustin smiled, not surprised that he wanted to hide it. “Alpha Nick is a respecter of the mate bond just like me. If he could even let a wonderful woman like Sheila go because of his blockheaded mate, then you can understand.”

He began helping himself with the appetizers, passing some to Tom. The latter had a complicated expression on his face. He didn’t care that Dustin called Charlotte blockheaded, as so was the case, but Sheila? What was he talking about?

“What do you mean by a wonderful woman?”

Beta Dustin heartily explained. “Well, Sheila turned things around in this pack. Even I saw her as a threat. That is the only reason I’m glad she left. She’s all the pack members talk about now.”

Tom pondered. Charlotte had made mention of Sheila a lot of times, but his interest was never piqued. Now he wondered if he had seen Sheila at the wedding. “Have I met her?”

“I don’t know. But you left the wedding quite early.”

“I did,” fom agreed. Beta Dustin dropped his cutlery and asked seriously,

“Tell me, are you in love with the Alpha’s mate?”

Tom froze. If anyone found out that he and Charlotte had been dating before she even met Alpha Nick, all hell would break loose. “Dustin, what nonsense are you spitting? Are you drunk?”

Dustin sipped a glass of water and watched with interest as Tom had not lifted anything to his lips. He was rather nervous, but when he heard Dustin’s reason for being nosy, he realized it wasn’t what he was thinking.

“How can I be drunk when there is so much to do? Look, since you don’t care about the mate bond, then why

don’t you hook up with Sheila? She’s a desperate woman but very industrious.”

The suggestion piqued his interest a little, but he was also afraid of being trapped by Beta Dustin. He was Alpha Nick’s beta, after all.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Promise to keep it a secret?” Beta Dustin looked around and asked. Tom equally looked around and, seeing no one, he replied,
