Hannah used Derek's apology as a safety net for Brittany.
She knew Derek had a thing for Loraine and feared he might waver seeing Loraine in her current predicament.
"Derek, I need you to swear."
Derek paled. He hadn't seen Loraine since their engagement party.
Faced with Hannah's demand, he took a deep breath and said with firm resolve, "Even if you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't protect her anymore."
Hannah knew Derek was a man of his word. She sighed with relief, "Then you may go."
Katelin exhaled and left with Derek.
The night before her surgery, Brittany kept Hannah company, reminiscing about their college years.
"Bri, what do you think the baby will look like?"
This was the first time Hannah expressed some reluctance towards the baby.
Brittany, inexperienced, could only hold Hannah's hand, "The baby will be adorable, Hannah. If you don't want the surgery, we don't have to do it."
"I've already taken the medicine." Hannah’s eyes welled up, "And I don't really like this child."
She just felt a bit sad.
A tiny life, just like that, was over.
Brittany felt for her but could offer no help. She could only watch as dawn broke and the sun rose.
Before entering the operating room, Derek rushed over. The Chester family avoided him like the plague. Derek still waited at the door.
In just a few days, he had lost noticeable weight.
Brittany brought him a cup of water, "It's a minor surgery, don't worry."
Derek accepted the cup, his fingers slightly trembling, "I wasn’t actually drunk that night."
He knew his situation. If he were really drunk, he wouldn't have been able to sleep with her.
Brittany, not quite familiar with Derek, ended the comforting words there.
The surgery went smoothly.
When Hannah was wheeled out, Lionel shot Derek a glare, "Get lost!"
Derek didn't move.
He wanted to ensure Hannah was safe.
Brittany followed the Chesters to the ward. When Hannah woke up, everything was normal.
Hannah's parents sighed with relief. They hired the best nurse for her. Hannah's mum held her, eyes red.
