Late at night, at the police station.
Interrogation room.
Brittany was dragged into the police station, with cop Fred Johnson handling the case sitting across from her. There's a lamp and a glass of water on the table.
"Start talking, Ms. Dustin. We've done our homework. You and Mr. Carrol were tight. Even when you were kidnapped before, he was helping you behind the scenes. Now he's dead, and you're on our suspect list."
"I wasn't trying to hurt him." Facing the relentless questioning, Brittany didn't seem to break a sweat.
"You weren't trying to hurt him?"
Fred didn't buy it, "He betrayed you, and you just let it slide?"
Brittany shrugged, "Yes, Mr. Carrol did betray me, but he had helped me. I wouldn't harm him."
Fred let out a snort of disbelief, slapping a pile of documents on the table. "Take a look. According to our investigation, Mr. Carrol was supposed to leave Imperial City. The only person he saw after coming back was you. If it wasn't you, then who?"
Fred had read about Brittany in the papers. She was the kind to send her own father to prison, let alone a lawyer who had betrayed her!
"Also, we found that you wired him a large sum of money. Can you explain what that was for?"
Was this seven-figure wire transfer hush money?
"Mr. Carrol helped me a lot in the past. Even though we had our differences, we had a bond," Brittany didn't think there was anything wrong with the transfer. "So in your opinion, I should have cut him out completely, disregarding our past? If I did that, how am I any different from an animal?"
Fred was stumped by her words. He was hot-headed and impatient and felt like Brittany was just making excuses.
He slammed his hand on the table. "Brittany, quit playing games. If it wasn't you who killed him, who else could it be? I suggest you come clean. Otherwise, you're not setting foot out of this station!"
"Under the law, I'm obliged to cooperate with your investigation, but why should I confess to a crime without evidence?"
Brittany was already upset about Mr. Carrol's death. Now she was stuck in a police station, being investigated, which was even more distressing!
Fred smirked, "Watch her closely, don't let anyone take her away!"
Then Fred left.
A cop following him whispered. "Fred, could we be mistaken?"
There's no reason for Brittany to kill Mr. Carrol!
