Isaac's phone buzzed out of the blue.

In the quiet hospital room, the ringtone was particularly jarring.

Isaac picked it up and saw Shona's name flash on the screen.

He frowned, standing up to step out of the room.

"Hello?"

"Mr. Salter, sorry to bother you at this hour." Shona's voice sounded weak.

"What's up?"

"The team told me everything's going smoothly, so I thought I'd let you know in case you are worried. I'll try to keep the engagement party small, but there's no avoiding the public gossip."

The sound of the New Year bells rang out, waking Brittany.

The spot next to her was already empty. Brittany propped herself up, rubbing her eyes. A strange sense of unease settled in her heart.

She struggled to sit up, sliding off the bed and making her way to the bathroom.
