The Billionaire's Maid Bride novel Chapter 615

"Lauren, why are you so damn stubborn?"

Emma wrapped her fingers around the man's slender, vein-lined hand. "So, is it really because of me?"

Her grip was tight, his hand feverish and dry from injury. In contrast, Emma's fingers were slightly cool. He clasped her hand in return, not wanting to let go.

"Lauren, this has nothing to do with you."

Emma bowed her head, pressing a kiss to the man's parched lips. Hughes froze for a moment. He and Emma, they were simply two adults with a mutual understanding. A straightforward exchange. He fancied her, he helped her out. In return, she reciprocated in the way adults do. There were feelings involved, but not the kind that spelled romantic love.

He and Emma had known each other for less than a week. But he had risked his life for her, had gotten hurt for her, and he had no clue what was going on in her head. Now, for the first time, Emma was the one initiating a kiss.

Hughes clenched his fists as Emma looked up at him, her eyes rimmed with red. On his lips lingered a faint taste of lychee, a remnant from her kiss. Hughes gently pinched her cheek. "Don't cry, I'm okay."

"Go to sleep, I'll stay right here with you," Emma said with a quivering voice. It wasn't like her to show emotion, but right now she couldn't help it. For the first time, she’d fallen for a man.
