She hadn't done anything to provoke him!
She couldn't care less about him, diverting her gaze from Alaric's furious eyes towards the door, catching a glimpse of Spencer and Emmeline standing there.
Her heart, racing with nerves, finally settled down. It wasn't her two little angels at the door after all.
She'd thought her dad had shown up with the kids, ringing the doorbell.
Letting out a deep sigh of relief, she thought, "Man, that was a close call. Feels like my heart's running a marathon. A few more scares like that, and I'll be on my way to a heart attack."
Clearly, Alaric coming over was a no-go from now on. Way too risky.
Hertha managed a smile, strolling over to warmly greet them, "Spencer, Emmeline, you made it! Come in, make yourselves at home."
"Sure, thanks, Ms. Kensington," Emmeline replied with her sweet smile, linking her arm through Spencer's as they stepped inside.
Alaric, ready to join them, turned towards the house.
Hertha quickly grabbed his arm, nudging him towards the door, her smile fading as she gave him a sideways look, "The exit's that way. Take care, won't you?"
Alaric frowned in displeasure, "Hertha, isn't it a bit obvious you're treating me differently?"
"I sure am, so what? You gonna eat me up? Your place is right across the street. Bye now," Hertha pushed him out the door, pointing towards his house across the way.
Then, she retreated indoors, shutting the door behind her.
Left out in the cold, Alaric's mood soured further. He exhaled a frustrated breath and headed home.
Thinking about how Hertha still seemed to care about Spencer's opinion, it was clear she hadn't moved on from Spencer.
