The Indifferent Ex-Husband: Heartstrings in the Mall of Fate novel Chapter 186

"Uh-huh, got it," Cindy nodded, a bit puzzled. "What's up?"

"Director Yearwood's feeling under the weather today. Tried calling her, but got no answer, and she hasn't called back. Can you go check on her?"

Hearing this, Cindy grew serious, and she didn't even bother tidying up before getting to her feet, saying, "I'm on it, heading over now."

Sophia's place wasn't too far from the office, just a quick cab ride, maybe fifteen minutes tops.

Cindy hopped in a taxi straight to Sophia's apartment complex, the same cozy two-bedroom they'd scoped out together before. She didn't expect to find the door unanswered and unopened after knocking.

Worry mounted for Cindy, so she whipped out her phone and tried giving Sophia a ring.

Sophia was at the hospital, just stepping out of the doctor's office, ready to settle the bill.

She'd tried to catch some Z's back at home in the morning, but her snooze didn't shake off that groggy, feverish feeling one bit.

Since she was a kid, Sophia's health had always been a bit on the fragile side, even a minor cold hit her harder than most.

With a flight to catch the next day, she fretted over her illness throwing a wrench in her plans, so she decided to play it safe and dropped by the hospital.

She'd been so caught up in the waiting and the check-up, she didn't even glance at her phone. Now, with the billing sorted, she remembered to check it, and, lo and behold, there was Cindy's missed call.

"Cindy, what's up?" Sophia answered quietly.

"Where are you?" Cindy sounded worried on the other end. "Mr. Dempsey told me you weren't feeling great and took the day off. He tried texting and calling, but no luck. Got us a bit uneasy, so he sent me to check on you. I've been knocking for ages with no answer. You're not home, are you?"

Sophia then realized that Cindy must have gone to that two-bedroom they'd found together.

"Yeah, I'm at the hospital," Sophia replied softly. "I didn't check my phone earlier, my bad."

Then she quickly added, "Don't fret, it's just a little cold."

Cindy breathed a sigh of relief. "Do you need me to come over?"

"No need," Sophia declined. "I've just seen the doc, I'll be heading back soon. You go back to the office, I'm alright, no need to stress over me."
