Malvina was completely taken aback by the kiss!
Ever since they got together, Ulrich had been living a life oscillating between the operating room and the Shadow Dragon Society, just like before. They hardly spent any real quality time together. Malvina herself was swamped with her own pile of issues, not to mention the gang's internal squabbles.
This was, arguably, their closest moment yet!
Gazing at Ulrich, memories of their first encounter flooded back to Malvina.
That version of Ulrich seemed more genuine. Sinister, rebellious, with a touch of morbidity, his gaze was usually cold.
Except when he looked at her, it was always tender!
Suddenly, Malvina realized that beneath Ulrich's typically genteel and somewhat stiff exterior lurked something far more intimidating. Yet, she didn’t dislike this side of Ulrich—in fact, she found herself somewhat drawn to it!
Robert was taken aback by Ulrich's words. “You… you touched my kids?”
Ulrich found a chair for Malvina to sit on, then crouched beside her to massage the marks left by the ropes.
His touch was gentle, but his tone was ice-cold. “Well, you wanted my woman to marry your son, so I had to see for myself what kind of fool he was. And I happened to come across your other kid too. I’m a doctor, after all, more on the benevolent side, so I just helped them reunite. Couldn’t bear to see a family torn apart.”
Robert’s eyes widened, only now realizing he had crossed someone untouchable! This kid, wasn’t he just a pretty face who couldn’t throw a punch in an underground fight club?
Facing this young man, Robert felt his legs tremble uncontrollably.
Ulrich continued, “Your life is cheap, riddled with disease. Your son’s life, however, intrigues me. But you’re quite the breeder, aren’t you? Another bastard child? Don’t worry, they’ll be reunited too.”
Robert’s heart pounded like a drum!
Damn it! The silence outside was so profound, one could hear birds chirping over the lake in the park! It was clear his men had been taken out. Had he known Ulrich was a Schnabel family member, Robert would have never dared to touch him!
Malvina, surprised, asked, “You investigated him?”
Ulrich gently unclenched Malvina’s fists, which were tight with tension.
“You won’t tell me. So couldn’t I just look into it myself? Malvina, you really don’t listen, do you? Don’t you trust that I love you?”
Even after getting together, Malvina often avoided him.
Ulrich understood—it was all about trust. She didn’t believe his feelings were genuine.
“I haven’t. I’m just… too busy.”
“Lies. You had time to visit me at the hospital before becoming my girlfriend. Now, you’re suddenly too busy? Malvina, are you regretting saying yes to me?”
Facing Ulrich’s slightly reddened eyes, a chill ran down Malvina’s spine. She wanted to believe in love, but doubted such good fortune would befall her, especially not with someone as wonderful as Ulrich. Why would someone like him love her?
Instinctively, she nodded, then shook her head.
“I don’t regret it. I’m just afraid you will. It’s not that I don’t have faith in you; I don’t trust myself. Robert was right about me.”
Ulrich’s grip tightened on Malvina’s chin. “Say that again? Remember, you are better than anyone else! Even if you doubt yourself, you can’t doubt me or Noella! She considers you a friend, which means you are the best. In my presence, you better drop that inferiority complex. You believe what everyone else says, so why can’t you believe me?”
Malvina shivered, but Ulrich forced her to meet his gaze. With no escape from his stare and tears brimming in her eyes, she could only nod in agreement.
“There, good. I’ll take care of some things, then we’ll head home for dinner.”
