Charlie had not expected Faith to invite him to her house for a meal.
He was thinking about finding an excuse to decline, but Faith did not wait for him to reply and quickly said, "It just so happens that tomorrow is Saturday, and Doris won't be working. You can help out at home and help me make a few more dishes."
Corwin, who was on the hospital bed, also chimed in agreement, "Yeah, Charlie, come to our house for a meal! Just treat it as a way of getting to know us."
It’s just that Corwin did not know that Charlie had previously been to his house. 1
Seeing that Faith and Corwin had both said so, Charlie was somewhat caught in a pinch.
He did not want to agree to the meal invitation, but he felt that it was rather difficult to reject someone else's goodwill.
Just as he was having trouble deciding what was the best course of action, Doris quickly said, "Mother, I am not free tomorrow. I need to work overtime at the company. Can we change it to some other day?"
"Ah? You need to work overtime tomorrow?” Faith said with a dissatisfied tone, "It’s a weekend, why do
you need to work overtime on a weekend?!"
Doris actually didn't really want to work overtime, but seeing her parents having a good impression of Charlie made her guess that her parents might want t o take the opportunity to invite Charlie over for a meal to learn more about him. 4
Hence, she was able to guess that her parents did not know that Charlie was a married man. Otherwise, they would certainly not be so bold. 3
So, she planned to postpone the matter of inviting Charlie over to eat at her home and then clarify to her parents regarding Charlie's background. Although his true identity couldn't be exposed, at least letting them know that he was married should at least stop them from having inappropriate thoughts. 5
Thinking about this, she then said with all seriousness, "Mother, I truly have something going on tomorrow. Not only tomorrow, but there are still many things I have to take care of for days to come. It has been really busy lately, so let's not make an appointment this week. Maybe we can see if there's time next week before we decide?"
When Faith heard her say this, she knew that there was no point in being persistent. She wanted to invite Charlie over to have a meal with all three of them. If her daughter was not around, she herself and her husband having a meal with Charlie would indeed seem very awkward.
Thus, she had no choice but to say, "In that case, I will not ask Charlie to come and have a meal this week. Depending on your work schedule, let's make an early appointment and try to invite Charlie over for a meal next weekend."
