Old Mrs. Sheffield's eyes were slightly red-rimmed as she recounted her tale, "Unfortunately, we developed our business too quickly and aroused the jealousy of others. When my husband was about to expand his business to Diosna City, the local jewelers became dissatisfied. They... hired someone to beat my husband to death!"
Tears welled up in her eyes as she tried to swallow her sobs.
This was Cameron’s first time hearing her grandmother’s tragic tale. So, her eyes brimmed with sympathetic tears as she listened to the old lady trying to show a brave front.
Kingsley came to an epiphany. "So… you're worried that such a tragedy will occur once more. That’s why you're so determined to bar the younger generation from expanding the family business?"
"That's right." Old Mrs. Sheffield wiped away her tears. "On that night, my husband came home later than usual. Initially, I assumed he had gone out for drinks again. However, when he rushed into the house covered in blood, I realized something was terribly wrong!"
She inhaled deeply before continuing, "He told me that on his way home, he encountered a young man. The man claimed that he was here to teach him a lesson on behalf of the jewelers in Diosna City, warning him from snatching up their businesses ever again!"
Kingsley furrowed his brow slightly. "If it were just a lesson, a beating would have been enough. There was no need to kill him, right?"
"That's what I thought at the time!" Old Mrs. Sheffield exclaimed in remorse.
"I saw that he only had a few wounds on his face and bruises on his body, so I didn't think much of it. I figured I should allow him to get a good night's sleep after dressing his wounds. I even planned to take him to the hospital for a thorough check-up in the morning. When he was in bed, he kept telling me that we needed to protect the Sheffield Family's business and never ruin the family's reputation. At the time, I laughed at him, thinking it was just a fight! He was a strong man, so how could he act like he was about to die just because he took a few punches..."
Old Mrs. Sheffield couldn't hold back her tears at this point.
Meanwhile, Kingsley sighed and remained silent. He had already guessed the outcome of the story.
After a while, she finally calmed down her grieving emotions and rasped, "I didn't expect that when I woke up the next day, he was already gone... Later, during the autopsy, the doctor said his internal organs had suffered severe impact, and he was seriously injured. In such a situation, there might not have been much pain immediately after the injury. Unfortunately, without timely medical treatment, most people wouldn't survive the next day..."
