She had intended to send him away with that sentence.
It upset Ernest in an instant. Looking at Leah's calm and smiling face, he felt his mood sour and his heart tighten.
He didn't know how to explain whatever that happened in the gym that morning to Leah and Maria. He didn't know if they had truly misunderstood their conversation.
However, after Leah's indirect dismissal, he was certain that Leah had definitely misunderstood.
Leah didn't even want to look at him, causing him to get upset. Ernest stayed silent for a while and didn't get up to leave. However, he didn't say a word. He just stared at Leah's face quietly.
Eventually, Leah was forced to return his gaze.
The two of them looked at each other in silence.
There was no need for Leah to tell Ernest to leave directly. They were both smart people, so it was easily understood.
Even so, Leah was still beaming at Ernest.
To be honest, she was trying to prompt Ernest into saying something. Otherwise, they would only be wasting their time looking at each other like that.
Eventually, Ernest finally spoke up. He looked at Leah and said slowly, "It's a misunderstanding."
Leah let out a laugh and replied without a pause, "What are you talking about?"
"You know what I'm talking about," Ernest was firm. His tone was deep, as if he was trying to hold back his emotions.
Leah laughed and looked up at Ernest's handsome face. Her voice was soft but firm as she replied, "I'm sorry. I really don't know what you're talking about. You're just confusing me with weird and vague statements. I have no idea what you mean. You'd better explain yourself."
Didn't Celeste hold a soft spot in Ernest's heart?
Whenever Celeste was brought up, Ernest seemed to not be able to take it.
Leah was a little annoyed by his behavior.
When Ernest heard her say that, he frowned. After a long while, he started to explain slowly, "Leah, you misunderstood my feelings for Celeste."
"Oh, really? How so? Don't you like her? I know you guys had a fling in the past before," Leah kept nodding.
"No. There was never a past between the two of us. I've never even had a proper relationship with Celeste," Ernest denied.
Leah was stunned. After a long pause, she replied, "Oh, is that so? I'm sorry to hear that. I guess you're right. If you guys had been together before, your brother probably wouldn't be with her right now. How tragic for you and Celeste."
There was no hint of sarcasm in her tone, but Ernest could clearly feel a hint of mockery hidden in her words.
"Leah, don't say that," Ernest's breathing quickened. He started to feel more uncomfortable.
"What do you want me to say instead?" Leah shot back with a smile.
Ernest narrowed his eyes and grunted, "Don't use sarcasm on me. I think of Celeste as my sister, alright? I love her as a sibling. She is my brother's girlfriend and will be my sister- in- law in the future."
Leah nodded with a smirk, "So what?"
Ernest thought that Leah really had a sharp tongue. With just a few words, she had succeeded in making him feel embarrassed.
He couldn't keep his calm in front of Leah.
"We shouldn't quarrel about things that have to do with Celeste. It's completely unnecessary," Ernest said, trying to get Leah to understand his point of view.
Leah nodded and said, "Ernest, I don't know what you're talking about. We've never even argued about it."
Ernest was stunned by that comment. He frowned and looked at Leah.
Leah was still smiling as she looked up at him.
"Ernest, I really don't want to think about how you feel about Celeste right now. Furthermore, I don't think we were quarrelling at all. To be precise, we were just giving each other the cold shoulder."
Leah was a writer.
As such, she was better at using precise words to describe their situation.
Ernest looked at her quietly and muttered, "Are you still going to give me the cold shoulder?"
Leah stayed silent for a few seconds. Then, she looked up at Ernest and suggested, "To be honest, I don't. I thought about what to do with you before I came back. After putting some thought into it, I think that we may not be suited to be together. Should we just go back to being regular friends?"
If they were friends, Leah would not have to suffer as much.
"You want to break up with me?" Ernest took a deep breath. He felt his heart clench in his chest. Leah's dazzling smile nearly blinded him.
Leah nodded, "Yes, I plan to."
Ernest stared at her for a long while. However, she remained silent.
