Celeste's body stiffened, nearly fainting at his words.
She pursed her lips and smiled bitterly. "Yes, you're right. I really can't explain this to Aunt Smith and Uncle Jones, so I can only just run away. I don't know how to face them, which is why I don't want to go back. Just let me go. Just consider it a debt that I owe to your family, and to you. Either way, I won't be able to repay my debt anymore."
Gary got even angrier after hearing that.
He felt even more distressed.
It seemed that she really wanted to draw a clear line with him.
It was only at that moment did Gary truly understand the extent of the harm he inflicted on Celeste.
He thought that he was completely devoted to her, but he did not expect himself to unintentionally hurt Celeste.
He slowly walked to the bed with a wry smile and sat on the edge of the bed. Sighing, he said, "Celeste, you're using such a cruel way to hurt me.
Why do we have to do this?"
Celeste smiled sadly.
To her, it felt like she had been thrown into the depths of hell as well. However, only God himself knew that how reluctant she was to hurt him.
That was not her intention at all.
It was precisely because she did not want to bring endless harm to Gary in the future that she decided to leave him.
The only reason why she wanted to leave him right now was so that he could be happy.
When she heard him say that, she became even more determined.
"That's right. I'm a completely heartless person. I have no conscience at all. So, let me go. Stop sending someone to follow me, and don't investigate my whereabouts too. I just want to be free forever. Okay?"
A chilling aura swept over him, and Gary felt completely helpless.
The coldness seemed to have come out from within him. No matter how hot the room was, it was not enough to drive the bone-chilling cold away.
"Go back to Boston," Gary said. "Even if you're angry, that's the least you should do. I can promise you this. As long as you go back to study, I won't disturb you anymore."
"Please leave," Celeste repeated. "If I wanted to study, I'd go back. But now, I don't have any freedom at all. I can feel that there are people following me wherever I go. It's really making me feel suffocated."
"If you feel uncomfortable with them following you around, I can talk to my dad about it," Gary said patiently. "I'll give you enough freedom, and we won't bother you. However, only on the condition that you promise to go back to study in Boston."
"Really?" Celeste looked up at Gary, who was sitting on the bed. She was still unsure whether she could fully believe that promise of his.
"Yes." Gary nodded seriously.
"I just want to be alone and explore the world. I don't want to be disturbed by anyone, let alone be followed. I want to think everything through," Celeste said, slowly and clearly.
"Okay, I can promise you that." Gary stood up. "I can go back now, and I'll bring everyone that I brought with me."
Celeste was shocked.
Gary had already walked to her side. He moved slightly and grabbed Celeste, then pulled her into his embrace.
Celeste trembled, and a trace of panic flashed in her eyes.
Gary whispered in her ear, "Celeste, take care."
She wanted to struggle, however, she immediately stopped.
She did not want to look up. Gary looked into her eyes and saw the complicated emotions in her eyes.
His heart sank.
Celeste choked on her words, but she still managed to say, "You take care too!"
"Okay." It took him a great effort to say that word. He gazed at Celeste deeply one last time, then turned and left.
The moment went out of the room, Lowell immediately walked up to him.
Lowell found it strange to see Gary coming out alone. "Why have you come out alone? Where's Celeste?"
"Let's go," Gary answered in a low voice. "Everyone, let's leave. There's no need to follow Celeste anymore."
"Why? It's not safe for a girl to wander outside by herself!" Lowell protested. How could he not be worried?
At first, he thought that he could persuade
Celeste, but he did not expect it to end just like that.
From the looks of it, things were over between Celeste and Gary.
"She's already an adult," Gary said. "She must have considered these things already. If we keep ordering people to follow her, it'll only make her feel more uncomfortable. So, tell everyone to withdraw."
"I should go inside and persuade her once more." Lowell still would not give up. He felt that he could not allow it to end like that.
"There's no need for that," Gary replied. "Just do as I say."
"Gary."
"Just do as I say," Gary repeated in a low voice. There was no room for discussion.
Lowell was shocked by his words.
Lowell shook his head. "No. I should still try my best first before I give up. If I go back with you now, how am I going to explain this to my brother and sister?"
