When Brett heard that the guy was a good-for-nothing fool, he couldn't help but snicker. What threat could a fool pose?
But he still didn't like the way Ryker looked at Izabella with such eagerness, as if someone was peeking at his hidden treasure.
Ryker happily took the cake, but then noticed that all the kids around had one too. His mood instantly dropped, thinking that Izabella had brought it just for him, but it turned out to be a casual gesture.
Ryker had so much to say to Izabella, but he didn't know where to start. Being slow and lonely for years, he had no idea how to socialize.
Looking at Izabella, he noticed she seemed much more worn out. He had many questions about what might have happened during her one-month disappearance. Had she been sick or in the hospital?
Before he could ask, Ryker felt a sharp, icy gaze on him. He looked into Brett's eyes, and something flashed quickly in his muddled mind, like a nerve being poked, causing instant headache. He clutched the back of his head and seemed to recall a familiar person.
Brett's eyes darkened when Ryker looked up.
Ryker shrank back a step, looking at Brett and then at Izabella nearby.
The director, being perceptive, immediately sensed the unusual atmosphere and tried to mediate, "Ryker, this is Mr. Windham, Ms. Salotti's husband."
Ryker's expression stiffened. So Izabella was already married. And being married meant having a husband.
Suddenly, he felt a bit emotional, with eyes reddening. He hurriedly replied with an "Oh," before turning and running off, ignoring the director calling him from behind.
"Please don't mind, he's usually very polite."
Brett stared at Ryker's retreating figure, lost in thought. After a while, he asked, "Did you say his name was Ryker?"
"Yes."
"Why is he named that?"
The director didn't understand, but explained the name anyway, "Ryker was brought to the orphanage 15 years ago, and it was in autumn. He had amnesia and couldn't remember anything, so he was given the name Ryker."
Brett clenched his jaw, this reminded him of something.
Fifteen years ago matched the time, but not the place. Could Ryker be the person he thought? No, it's unlikely, since the search back then took three years without result and the police declared him dead. He shouldn't be alive.
Apparently, he needed someone to investigate further. Brett had no appetite for the meal anymore.
