The fact that Vincent was absent the entire night gnawed at Kelly, leaving her restless and worried on the living room couch.
As day broke, she reached for her phone and called Alex.
"Kelly?" Alex answered after a few rings.
The familiar way Alex addressed her made Kelly frown slightly.
They had worked together before, and even though she was now Vincent's woman, Alex hadn't changed his casual tone or added a respectful title when speaking to her.
Pushing aside her unease, she asked, "Alex, is Mr. Lewis with you?"
"Mr. Lewis?" Alex paused for a moment.
Instead of answering directly, he asked, "Is something wrong?"
"He didn't return home last night, and I can't get in touch with him. I'm starting to worry. Is he with you discussing business?"
"Oh... Mr. Lewis isn't with me. He did have a very important project to handle last night. Maybe it kept him up too late to come home."
"I see." Kelly's voice was thoughtful.
"Well, if that's all, I'll hang up now," Alex said.
"Wait... Alex, how was the chicken soup yesterday?"
A brief pause stretched over the line. "It was good."
"Really? I was worried it might be too salty. Did you like the herbs?"
"It was good," Alex repeated, his voice unwavering, as though he genuinely remembered the soup's taste.
"Is that so? Well, that's a relief." Kelly's tone faded. "Alright then. Goodbye."
As the call ended, her smile disappeared. She hadn't added any herbs to the chicken soup. Her question had been a test, and Alex had failed.
