Bride Behind the Mask novel Chapter 630

Maurice's face collapsed in an instant, twisting into a grimace of utter distaste. He was about to say something more when the sudden ring of his cell phone shattered the tense silence.

Without a word, Maurice killed the call and pulled Marguerite close, his voice a threatening whisper, "Listen up, Marguerite, play nice. Once I've wrapped up my business, we're getting hitched."

The mention of marriage made Marguerite's head spin. "If you're so desperate to tie the knot, how about I set you up with a profile on Cupid's Connection?"

Maurice's stare was dark and ominous, and it seemed like an argument was about to erupt when Robert stepped in to defuse the situation. "Maurice, you're here on business, right? It's getting late. I'll drop Marguerite and Miley off at the office so you can carry on without delay."

At that moment, the hotel valet, following Robert's earlier instructions, pulled up with the car they had left outside Bluebell Bistro the previous night.

Miley, sensing an opportunity, nudged Marguerite towards the exit, "Right, right, right, it's time for work. We can talk about this at home later! Marguerite, you have a factory visit today, right? Let's not keep them waiting!"

Maurice's phone rang again, and this time, he didn't answer or dismiss it. He nodded at Robert and watched the trio leave before picking up the call.

In the car, Miley looked at Marguerite with curiosity, "How come Maurice is even here?"

Marguerite, who hadn't slept well the night before, closed her eyes wearily and shook her head, her voice tired, "I don't know, just ran into him outside."

Miley was on edge, "You don't think he came here just to catch you, do you?"

Driving, Robert chuckled softly, "I doubt it. Last night's hotel visit was spontaneous. Unless Maurice has a mole by Marguerite's side, he couldn't have pinpointed her location so precisely. Besides, if he had come specifically for her, he wouldn't have let us take Marguerite away so easily. He's probably here for business at Regal Haven Hotel."

Miley was filled with confusion and indignation, "What kind of business could a man have at a hotel? Plus, he was dressed to the nines, his hair done just so! Don't you find it odd, Marguerite?"

Marguerite massaged her temples without opening her eyes, "What's it to me?"

Miley slapped her thigh in frustration, "What do you mean 'what's it to you'? He's practically forcing you into marriage! So, you can't go to a hotel, but he can? Talk about a double standard!"

She ranted on and on.

Though Maurice had lowered his voice earlier, Miley had overheard the marriage talk with Marguerite. Filled with righteous anger, yet, at the same time, she found it all incredibly strange.

"Marguerite, I remember Maurice talking about getting married, what, nearly two months ago? He seems so pushy, yet there's been no action? With his resources, if he could arrange your marriage to Mr. Winston before, why's he dragging his feet now when it's his turn?"
