Captive Hearts: The Tycoon's Ugly Bride novel Chapter 80

Chapter 80 The Ugly Man

Blanche arrived at the center of the dining hall, attracting a circle of spectators. The company mandated everyone to be there for breakfast by 7:30 sharp, but Blanche was late, displaying a demeanor of casual laziness. A perfect example of what not to be.

Moreover, Blanche had never appeared at the company before. Everyone was viewing her with a biased perspective. Cathy threw a glance at Blanche and muttered quietly.

"Such a sleepyhead. Was she a pig in her past life?"

The comment was barely audible, so Blanche didn't hear it, but those sitting at the same table with Cathy did. They chuckled and sneered behind their hands.

"Mrs. Herbart, please come and have breakfast with Mr. Herbart." Sam approached and led Blanche to Louis' table.

Looking at the direction Sam was pointing, there was indeed an empty seat for breakfast. When she looked around, all the other seats were taken. Blanche nodded and thanked him before following Sam.

Even though she had arrived late, she had no appetite at all. It felt as if there was a rock lodged in her heart.

All the senior executives of the company were at the table, aside from Louis, who was sitting at the head of the table. They all studied Blanche carefully when she joined them.

Louis picked up his glass of milk, leaned back, and glanced at Blanche.

Early in the morning before dawn, he had slipped back into his own room. When he left, seeing Blanche's rosy cheeks in deep slumber made him feel a pang of guilt.

At first, he had planned to lie on her bed for a bit before leaving. He had been suffering from insomnia these few nights. Blanche slept soundly, which was tempting.

He merely intended to feel the comfort of her bed before leaving, but he ended up almost sleeping till dawn.

If Blanche were to find out that he had slept on her bed last night, she would be furious.

Despite Louis' unwavering confidence in his charm, he had a premonition that if Blanche discovered that he had slept in her bed, she wouldn't react with the same excitement as most women would, as if they had just won one million dollars.

Blanche took a piece of bread, chewed a few bites, and propped up one side of her cheek.

Moments later, she drooped her head again, looking soulless.

Who was that man last night? Such a scoundrel.

Thinking about how Louis was in her room before she went to sleep, Blanche shifted her gaze, subtly checking him out. It could have been him.

What if he was the one who opened the window in the morning?

Louis was elegantly slicing his steak with a side profile that exuded dominance. There was no sign of anything amiss.

Louis lowered his gaze slightly, turned his head slightly, and their eyes almost met, but Blanche hastily averted her gaze.

At this moment, she really wanted to grab Sam, who was standing by her side, and ask him where his boss had slept last night.

"Mrs. Herbart, do you feel unwell? Should I take you to the hospital?" Seeing Blanche look at him, Sam asked first. He had noticed her being lost in thoughts for a while.

Blanche shook her head.

"No need. I am fine. I just didn't sleep well last night."

"Do you feel uncomfortable sleeping in that room? I'll arrange another room for you later."

Thinking about the wide-open window when she woke up in the morning, Blanche was indeed feeling uneasy.

"Have you heard? Darcy said she was scared to death last night. When she got up to use the bathroom, she found a man peeping at her through the window."

"You've gotta be kidding me? Was it some weirdo slipping in at night for something dirty?"

"That's what we think. Darcy said that when she shone a flashlight at him, the man was hideous and sleazy, his face full of pus-filled sores with a monkey-like appearance. You could tell at a glance that he was up to no good."
