In her free time, Karen would much rather spend her hours at the nearby old church, listening to the choir, than go on a vacation.
A getaway to a little island?
That seemed a bit far-fetched.
Karen squinted her eyes, a chuckle escaping her lips that was so loaded with mischief, anyone could tell there was a scheme brewing. While laughing, she reached out to pat Adah on the shoulder.
Adah felt a shiver run down her spine and instinctively stepped back, dodging Karen's hand.
Missing her target, Karen turned her head, a bit annoyed, "What are you, a turtle? Why are you shrinking back?"
Adah whimpered, "Your laugh scares me..."
After nearly four decades of being mother and daughter-in-law, Adah knew Karen all too well.
Whenever the old lady laughed like that, she was definitely cooking up some grand plan.
Karen continued with a grin, "Scared of what? Don't worry, I'm not a good person!"
Adah was taken aback, "!!!"
"Ah, no!" Karen quickly corrected herself, "I misspoke, don't worry, I'm not a bad person!"
Adah scoffed internally, almost believing her for a second.
Then Karen asked, "Is that boy coming home for dinner tonight?"
"He should be," Adah nodded.
Karen winked at Adah, "Just you wait and see."
Adah knew it. Her mother-in-law was about to pull her son into another one of her traps.
Evening came.
Sherman arrived home for dinner on time.
Midway through the meal, Karen suddenly put down her fork, "Adah, have you been in touch with Riley lately?"
"No, why?" Adah was confused.
Before she could grasp what was happening, her mother-in-law had already begun to set her trap for her naïve son.
Karen went on, "Didn’t you tell me this morning you wanted to go to that private island? I was thinking we should invite Ann too. Imagine, the three of us ladies there, it won't be safe! That's when we need a young man to protect us! Riley seems perfect for it, and it could be a great opportunity to set him up with Ann! Isn’t that killing two birds with one stone?"
At the mention of "three ladies," Sherman nearly choked on his food.
