I put in the password and opened the door of the apartment, only to see Benjamin. I was so nervous that I asked, "Where is Ellis?"
Benjamin was originally reading a book on the balcony. When he heard my words, he cast his gaze across the living room and looked at me in a charming way. He asked faintly, "You only care about your son? What about me?"
The way those jealous words came out of his mouth always made me feel like he was cute. I smiled and said, "Yeah, I only care about them."
Benjamin kept his eyes on Anthony. After a long silence, he asked in a low voice, " Anthony, do you know who I am?"
Anthony said calmly, "Yes, Emma's man."
"Attaboy."
Benjamin's lips curled up in delight. He put down the book in his hand and patted Anthony on his shoulder. "Anthony, from now on, you and Ellis are both my sons," he said in a firm tone.
If you say so." Anthony's tone was neither sad nor happy, and he accepted the facts calmly, without any other emotion.
In fact, I don't understand this child. But even so, it didn't change the fact he was an excellent boy.
I handed my handbag to Benjamin and asked, "Where's Ellis?"
Benjamin held my bag in his arms and said, "He didn't know when you would come home, so he left with Sean."
I asked again, "And went where?"
Benjamin hooked his lips and said with a smile, "Where can he go with Sean? An amusement park or a cinema."
"Fine," I said, and then took two gifts from Anthony, and I handed one of them to Benjamin.
He opened the bag with joy and took out the gift box inside. He pretended not to care and said, "What is this?"
I looked at him speechlessly and finally said. "It's your gift."
Anthony might not be able to keep up with his childishness, so he went around Benjamin to the balcony to check on the flowers and plants.
Benjamin was very disappointed when he opened the gift box and saw the gift inside.
He said in a slightly different tone, "Why is it a tie?"
Confused, I asked, "What did you expect me to give you?"
Instead of answering my question, he threw back another one, "Then what did you give your son?"
"A soccer ball, signed by Roy Keane."
Benjamin said in a low voice, "That's what you call a gift."
I reached out and caressed his cheek. "Is that so?" I asked. "I'm the one who designed this tie, how's that for a gift?"
Benjamin's eyes lit up and said, "How could it be?"
I turned the tie around and said to Benjamin, "Here's your name embroidered on it."
"There's no need for you to be jealous of your son," I said with a smile.
Benjamin drew the tie from my hand. He looked at me haughtily and asked in a faint tone, "Who said I was jealous?"
With these words, he turned around and went back to his bedroom.
When Benjamin returned to his bedroom, I squatted down beside Anthony. I followed his gaze for a long time before asking, "What are you thinking about?"
Anthony reached out and picked up a blue flower. He placed it in his palm and asked, "Will Emy never come back home?"
I thought for a moment and answered, "Not for now, at least."
Anthony suddenly asked, "Aunt, do you love that man?"
How should I answer this question to a child? Just as I was thinking, Anthony added, "You two love each other, but you just seem not to be able to stay with each other."
"Why is that?"
I was stunned and asked in confusion, "I'm with him now. Why can't we stay together?"
He looked at me with a bright gaze. Under his gaze, I heard him say, "If you really can, as you said, Emy would be here."
Even Anthony understood that I was still wary of Benjamin. How should I tell him what kind of person Benjamin was?
He was fickle-minded. One second he would be telling me how much he loved me and the next he would betray me.
His betrayal was something I should never have allowed to happen more than once. But I did, and I broke my bottom lines for him again and again. If it were Steve, I would've kicked him out of my life a long time ago.
But he was not Steve. He was the Benjamin that I had loved for many years. Even if he hurt me and lied to me, I did not hesitate for a second when he said he wanted me back.
I could do that, but I couldn't let Emy do that with me.
Emy was my last bottom line.
When Sean returned home with Ellis, I just made dinner. Ellis's eyes were full of surprise when he saw me. He threw down the toys in his hand and threw himself into my arms. I reached out to touch his head and asked in a gentle tone, "What did you do with Uncle Sean?"
"Uncle Sean took me to the amusement park."
