Heartstrings on Fire novel Chapter 1099

Agnes froze in her tracks.

Elton spoke up, "Is it that unbearable to see me?"

Agnes frowned upon hearing this, feeling an overwhelming sense of discomfort. Turning around, she said, "Mr. Taylor, you should address me as Ms. Pritchard or… Mrs. Whitfield."

Elton's expression subtly shifted, yet Agnes looked at him with a calm demeanor.

Finally, Elton couldn't help but laugh. It seemed he didn't care about what Agnes had just said. Continuing, he called her by her first name, "Agnes, are you still holding a grudge against me?"

Agnes furrowed her brow, "Mr. Taylor, I don't see what business we have with each other. If you're referring to what happened five or six years ago, I can assure you, I harbor no resentment. We parted on good terms, and that's in the past now. Let's not bring it up again."

Elton was reminded of their breakup. He had pleaded for her forgiveness, asking for another chance. But Agnes, in tears, refused. By then, Jared had already taken a special place in her heart.

Was that really parting on good terms? She had no idea how heart-wrenching it was for him at that time. The period he spent trying to get her out of his system made him feel like death would have been a mercy. There was a night he nearly drank himself to death in his room, wishing she would look back at him. But she didn't. The person who came wasn't her.

Elton chuckled, "Well, if you no longer hold a grudge, there's no need to avoid me, right? After all, we grew up together. If not lovers, we can at least be friends."

Agnes slightly frowned, then said, "I've moved on, but I don't want my husband to feel uncomfortable, so… it's better if we remain strangers."

Elton raised an eyebrow, "Mr. Whitfield is that petty?"

"It's not about him being petty, it's about my unwillingness."

Agnes didn't want to stand alone with Elton and turned to enter the banquet hall. At that moment, the lights in the entire hall suddenly went out. Agnes thought she heard several exaggerated gunshots. Simultaneously, the sky lit up with spectacular fireworks.

As the fireworks exploded, Agnes caught sight of the scene inside the hall. She saw a group of people in black, wielding guns and firing into the crowd. Screams of horror filled the hall, mingling with terrified shrieks. People started to flee in panic.

The fireworks in the sky faded. The scene turned dark once more. But the screams inside the building became even more distinct. Agnes felt dazed. Her body stiffened, unable to move. Fireworks burst into the sky again, illuminating the hotel as if it were daylight. The figures of gunmen in black still flashed before Agnes. The sounds of a horrific massacre filled the air.

Then, a fierce gunfight erupted inside. And Agnes was suddenly pulled down to crouch. She covered her head, feeling as though someone was shielding her in their arms. The sound of gunfire and fireworks created a chaotic cacophony, accompanied by tragic cries and screams of fear.

In that moment, Agnes felt as though she had descended into the deepest pits of hell. It was as if she was surrounded by malevolent spirits, and the cries of the damned echoed around her.
