But Agnes just couldn't shake off a peculiar feeling stirring inside her.
She sidled up to the old man, her voice barely above a whisper, "Sir, you mentioned earlier that Star's mother..."
Agnes trailed off, acutely aware of Esther's presence nearby. Agnes had heard whispers around Serenity Hall that Star was motherless, having lost her at a young age. Even Star had confessed she had never met her mother.
The old man replied, "I'm as puzzled as you are. Mr. Taylor told us Star's mom had passed away long ago, and now, out of the blue, he says she's coming to pick up her daughter. We'll know soon enough when Mr. Taylor arrives."
All this time, Agnes had known her as Esther, never realizing her last name was Lu. It was only now that Agnes learned Esther's full name was Esther Lu. A name as beautiful as a galaxy full of stars. But the fact she was a Lu...
A thought flashed through Agnes's mind about Elton and Jenny, who also had a daughter... But what were the odds? After all, there were countless people with the surname Lu. Agnes couldn't help but find her own thoughts amusing.
Yet, for the first time, Agnes looked closely at Esther's face and felt an inexplicable tug at her heartstrings. When Agnes first met Star, she felt a sense of déjà vu, especially because of his eyes. Now, it dawned on Agnes that Star's eyes bore a striking resemblance to Jenny's – both large, innocent, and brimming with vulnerability.
Agnes still remembered the first time she met Jenny, looking so helpless and bullied, her eyes invoking a protective instinct in anyone who saw them. That's how Agnes and Jenny became fast friends.
A heavy feeling settled in Agnes's heart, dismissing the coincidence as too far-fetched. Before long, someone at the entrance of Serenity Hall announced, "Master, Mr. Taylor has arrived to pick up our little sister."
Agnes turned towards the door, her gaze landing on a tall, imposing figure stepping through the threshold. And at that moment, Agnes's heart sank.
It was Elton. Indeed, it was Elton. And right behind him was Jenny. All of Agnes's doubts vanished in an instant.
Esther was truly Elton and Jenny's daughter. Jenny had used her own safety as leverage to see her daughter, a demand Elton had apparently agreed to.
What a small world it was. After all the events and all the people she had encountered, Agnes found herself entangled in their lives once more, as if a ball of yarn tangled beyond recognition.
Years had passed, and Agnes thought she had left these connections behind. But fate, it seemed, had other plans, weaving their lives together in the most unexpected ways.
Jenny, upon spotting Agnes and Jared in the courtyard, wore a look of mild surprise, quickly approaching with a questioning tone, "Why are they here?"
Elton, locking eyes with Agnes, showed no sign of astonishment but chose not to answer Jenny's question. Jenny's expression shifted subtly, a reminder that whenever Agnes was around, she felt sidelined.
