For half a month, life was an oasis of tranquility for Agnes. May had arrived, marking two weeks since she had resigned from her job. Her days were filled with dropping off and picking up Nocturne from school, enjoying languid mornings, and occasionally visiting the CEO's office at the Tim Group. Life was leisurely and pleasant.
Agnes couldn't recall ever living such a relaxed and carefree life before. However, as the days passed, she began to feel a sense of restlessness creeping in. She toyed with the idea of opening a flower shop or a bookstore. As a child, she had been an avid reader, especially after her mother's passing when Laura joined the family.
To escape the tense atmosphere at home, Agnes often sought refuge in a quaint bookstore located in the old part of town. The shop, with its vintage charm, felt like a portal to another era. It was a quiet haven, filled with an array of books. Agnes would find a cozy corner, settle in with a book, and spend entire days immersed in reading. Those solitary weekends didn't feel lonely at all.
Years ago, the bookstore closed down due to redevelopment, and Agnes had always longed for the special feeling it evoked. She envisioned creating her own sanctuary, a refuge for those seeking solace, which seemed like a meaningful pursuit.
Being a woman of action, Agnes quickly found a location and decided on the décor. Her days were now bustling with renovation work, sometimes getting home even later than Jared. Nonetheless, she made it a point to pick up Nocturne from school every day. Sometimes they would visit the shop together, or she’d drop him off at the Tim Group to spend time with Jared until work was done.
To outsiders, their lives might appear glamorous, but in reality, they were like any other couple, hustling through their day, and occasionally enjoying a simple meal of steaming hot pasta together. This, to Agnes, was life. And she eagerly anticipated each new day.
Today, as usual, Agnes was on her way to pick up Nocturne and drop him off at the Tim Group when she received a call from Jenny. Agnes recognized the number immediately; Jenny had called her before. Hesitant, Agnes deliberated whether to answer. Eventually, she did.
To her surprise, it was Esther’s sweet voice on the other end: “Is this Agnes? It's Esther.” Hearing Esther’s voice was like indulging in a piece of candy. Her voice was as comforting as melted chocolate.
Agnes quickly responded, “Esther, it's you. How have you been?” Esther sounded cheerful: “I've had a great time. Mom took me to lots of amusement parks, and we’ve eaten so many delicious things. But, Agnes, I miss you and Nocturne. Could you come over for a visit?”
“I miss you too,” Agnes replied. “Why don't you come over tonight? My mom said she'll cook us dinner.” Esther’s hopeful tone made it hard for Agnes to refuse. Besides, Agnes wanted to see for herself how Esther was doing. So, she agreed.
Esther cheered joyfully. Then, Jenny took the phone. Jenny's voice came through, “I'll send you the address. Agnes, I'll be waiting at home.” Agnes wasn't sure what Jenny meant by that. But she had a hunch this was no ordinary dinner invitation.
