When Agnes was around, it seemed like Elton could only see her, no matter the situation.
Jenny approached them, "What a coincidence, Agnes! I'm here with Elton to pick up our daughter. You'll get to meet her."
Jenny scanned the room, and her gaze settled on a little girl who looked about four or five years old. She hurried over and scooped up Esther.
Jenny said, "You must be our little star, right? Do you recognize me? I'm your mom."
Esther looked perplexed and instinctively hid behind Agnes. Then, she spotted Elton. She ran towards him, grasping his finger, and called out, "Daddy."
In that moment, Agnes was certain. Esther was indeed Elton's daughter. It was too much of a coincidence.
Jenny walked over, crouched down, and extended a hand toward Esther. "Star, don't be scared. I'm your mom, I really am. If you don't believe me, ask your dad. We're here to take you home."
Esther looked up. "Daddy, is she really my mom?"
Elton's gaze finally shifted from Agnes. He glanced at Jenny. Their eyes met, and a warning flickered through Jenny's gaze. A hint of resignation appeared on Elton's face before he nodded. "Yes, she's your mom."
Esther seemed stunned by the word "mom." In her mind, a mother was something she had only imagined, envying other kids who had their moms by their side.
"Dad, didn't you say that mom became the brightest star in the sky?" Esther asked.
Elton had indeed told Esther that because he never thought he'd have anything to do with this woman again. He didn't have the heart to shatter Esther's beautiful illusion, so he spun a lovely fairy tale. He told her that her mom had become the brightest star in the sky, always watching over her, coming out every night to see her.
But now...
Even though Elton was reluctant to admit it, Jenny was indeed Esther's biological mother. That was Jenny's condition. He had agreed. If he didn't, knowing Jenny's capabilities, she would definitely cause trouble for Agnes.
Elton thought it was their own issue to resolve slowly. But he hadn't expected such a coincidence. Agnes was also here.
Once Esther received confirmation from Elton, she became incredibly excited. She had always longed for a mother, while others told her her mother was dead. Now, she was standing right in front of her, alive and well.
Esther felt like she was dreaming. Suddenly, she flung herself into Jenny's arms. "Mom, mom, why did it take you so long to come see me? I thought you were gone."
Jenny stood up, holding Esther, but then turned to face Agnes. It seemed like, at that moment, she only cared about Agnes's reaction.
Compared to Esther's heartbreaking sobs, Jenny's lips curled into a smirk, almost gloating. "I came to find you, didn't I? Mom has been looking for you all these years."
