Although she could barely recognize a few words, her mind was sharp, and her ability to grasp new concepts was remarkably strong—almost like she had a photographic memory.
After just one reading, she could recount the complex web of characters with absolute clarity. Telling the story from beginning to end, she brought it to life so vividly that Agnes was nearly spellbound by the narrative prowess of a child.
When Esther finished, even Jared, who had been listening quietly, couldn't help but express his admiration: "This kid truly has a gift for storytelling."
Esther, knowing that Jared was complimenting her, felt a mix of pride and shyness. Agnes then said, “Jared, it’s time we headed back.” It was getting late, and indeed, it was time for them to return home.
Esther was thrilled with the day’s events and was reluctant to see them go, pleading with Agnes to come visit again soon. Jenny hugged Esther tightly and reassured her, “Don’t worry, you’ll see Agnes and Nocturne again very soon. Mom and Dad are getting married shortly, and Agnes and Mr. Jared will surely come to the wedding.”
Esther's happiness was boundless: “Mom and Dad are getting married?” Elton didn’t respond, merely turning to walk inside, his silence speaking volumes. Agnes wore a complex expression, a mix of emotions crossing her face. Jared, though surprised, managed to maintain his composure better than the rest. Only Esther was purely ecstatic.
Once they were back in the car, Jared finally broached the subject: “Is Elton really marrying her? What exactly happened?” Jared sensed that something significant had transpired during the brief period Agnes had been out of sight.
Agnes sighed, “I don’t know how things ended up this way. They had a brief argument, and then suddenly, this.” “It’s probably Elton getting tired of Jenny’s persistence, or maybe it's because of Esther,” Agnes speculated, feeling a mix of resignation and concern.
Jared suddenly took Agnes’s hand, asking, “Are you still worried about him?” Agnes snapped back to reality, turning to look at Jared, “I’m not worried about him; I just have a bad feeling about all this.” She couldn’t shake the feeling that this was not the end, but merely the beginning of something else.
“Their affairs are none of your concern anymore. Just stay out of it from now on,” Jared advised. Agnes wasn’t planning to get involved, though she did worry about Esther. The child seemed happy enough living with her parents, which was some consolation.
After the incident, Jenny had ceased all contact with Agnes. Indeed, Jenny’s previous warmth was nothing more than a means to an end with Elton. Now that she had what she wanted, Agnes’s presence was no longer desirable.
Yet, Agnes hadn’t heard any rumors about the Taylor family. Given Jenny’s character, if Elton had agreed to marry her, she would likely want the whole world to know as a way of staking her claim. But recently, Willowbrook Town had been unusually quiet.
It wasn’t until a casual dinner with Ramona that Agnes learned Mrs. Wilson had temporarily gone back to Manhattan. Apparently, Mr. Wilson’s sons had unearthed new evidence and were suing Jenny again, entangled in yet another messy dispute over the uneven distribution of assets. So, Jenny was back in Manhattan to deal with that mess.
Agnes finally understood the situation but didn’t dwell on it much. Her bookstore renovation was nearly complete. Now busily selecting books for her stock, she was gearing up for the grand opening.
