"Does Director Bowman still have a thing for Mr. Whitfield, or why else would she be primping herself up in there?"

"Nah, she's already married, plus the head of this company is her father-in-law. I bet she just can't stand the idea of Mr. Whitfield not seeing her at her best. It's like trying to appear all perfect in front of your ex."

"I sure would love to meet Mr. Whitfield's ex-wife. She must have been something to ruffle Director Bowman's feathers. Heard she was a Pritchard, a rich lady and a big movie star. But after she divorced Mr. Whitfield, all the stories about her just seemed to vanish."

Suddenly, someone turned to Agnes, who was still engrossed in her writing, "Hey Agnes, you're a Pritchard too. Could Mr. Whitfield's ex-wife be some distant relative of yours?"

Agnes had been hearing every word as they discussed the matter. She had been intentionally avoiding the topic, refraining from participating, and quietly focusing on her work. But why on earth did the spotlight suddenly shift to her?

"You are indeed quite a character." They all laughed and gossiped, teasing each other.

Agnes sighed in relief.

She had done it on purpose. Claiming to be Jared's ex-wife was the perfect way to make sure no one would believe it. But she couldn't keep up this charade forever.

When the truth came out, at least she had given herself a way out.
