"Yesterday, according to our latest investigation, it has been discovered that one in ten citizens of Montiria have become addicted to Night Vine," Clara reported on Dornia's national broadcast. She stood on screen, holding a folder of fabricated data, her expression solemn as she described how Montiria had allegedly turned into a hellscape, all under the control of Matthew Larson, the Prime Regent, and Mortimer Zedler, the Nation's Grandmaster.
"They no longer care about their wages; all they desire is a hit of Night Vine. The entire nation has been turned into a living nightmare, thanks to Larson and Zedler. Now, let's switch to our live coverage on the ground."
The broadcast cut to an "on-site report," showing an old man, thin and scarred, working in a field under the blistering sun. The camera zoomed in on him, and after a series of obviously staged questions, the reporter asked, "Sir, what are you doing out here in this heat?"
The old man, toothless and weary, trembled as he replied, "I'm planting Night Vine."
The reporter's eyes widened in mock disbelief. "But Night Vine is banned in Montiria! How are you still cultivating it?"
The old man let out a bitter laugh, tears welling in his eyes. "We have no choice. The soldiers, if we don't deliver Night Vine to them, they whip us mercilessly." He pointed to the red scars on his shoulder, his voice breaking as he wept. "King Gadel was betrayed by the Prime Regent, and they've even imprisoned Princess Fiorenna. Montiria is now a land of despair."
The old man's dramatic performance seemed to shock the reporter, who exclaimed, "But the reports say Montiria is focusing on food and medicinal crops and that its citizens are all well-fed."
At that, the old man trembled violently. "Look at me! Do I look like I've eaten well? I beg you, send the great Dornia army to save this broken country!" He collapsed to his knees, sobbing, as he pleaded for help.
The video ended abruptly after the old man's plea, only ever showing him and the reporter in the segment.
Still, the damage had been done. Clara's carefully staged report stirred up a frenzy among the people of Dornia. They viewed themselves as saviors, righteous in their cause, convinced Matthew and Mortimer were vile villains who turned Montiria into a living nightmare. Petitions flooded city halls across Dornia.
"We cannot sit idly by while our neighbors suffer!"
"Dornia must send troops to liberate Montiria from those tyrants!"
"Montiria has been our ally for years. We have a duty to act!"
Large crowds gathered in the streets of Dornia, holding banners and shouting slogans, their faces full of righteous fury as if they were preparing to rescue their own nation.
However, just as Dornia was swept up in the fervor of saving Montiria, an unexpected message surfaced online. It featured images of Montirian farmers with bright, happy smiles standing alongside a young woman with a sweet expression. The caption beneath the photos read, 'The truth behind Clara Birol's despicable lies!'
